I'm not a nurse and that is my opinion.
People vent about the challenges of their jobs here--not about being a nurse. My family and friends don't understand many of the difficulties I face at work, and I don't expect them too. They also don't think "code brown" is funny. It's nice to have a place to share/vent with people who understand, from code brown to code blue. I think people from all professions should have an outlet of some kind--we spend so much of our lives working, and we try so hard not to take our work home with us. This board provides a place for nurses to open the flood gates when they need to, or share a joke with people they know will understand. Think about what a nurse does for a moment. If you still think that we should be posting "happy things" you have confirmed exactly why nurses need a place to share with each other.

(No, I have no suggestions.) Just my two-cents' worth! You had to know this post would tick somebody off ( I guess itll be me ). Wow I would hate to be your CNA , tossing us out of the nursing boat in the same sentence as walmart staffers, like there is any comparison there in job responsibilities. Do you realize how elitist you sound? From Dictionary.com: Elitist/ elitism- The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.
- The sense of entitlement enjoyed by such a group or class.
- Control, rule, or domination by such a group or class.
Do you not remember what is was like to be a student? If we students are going to replace nurses down the road when you retire wouldnt you want to mentor them now as to perpetuate the best parts of the profession as you do with your children in life? | | No. 43 |

Re: Nurse vs. Not I'm not trying to ruffle feathers or incite a riot, but OP's idea that this forum should be for nurses only puts me in a quandary... As you will notice, if you take the time to read my information will learn, I hold degrees (BSN and MSN) in nursing as well as a BA in creative writing but currently hold no valid nursing license nor will I .... ever again. It was not taken from me. Instead, I had a CVA caused by small vessel disease that effectively ended my nursing career .... irrevocably and forever. I was left handed, swam, exercised daily, walked three miles per day, traveled frequently, played with our dog and cats, enjoyed playing games, was co-creator of a cartoon character, tutored students at the college where my husband teaches, was a literacy tutor, sat on the YWCA board, the homeless shelter board, was very active in our church, just to share a few things about me. The stoke affected my memory to a small degree only, most of which has come back and allnurses has enabled the now stay-at-home non-driving me a new bunch of friends, for which I am grateful. Now I'm reminded yet again, that I don't quite belong or fit in to a club I was an active member of for years! I may type two fingered now, can't drive, have my loving husband do simple ordinary things for me as I relearn who I am now, but, ya know what, OP? I'm STILL a nurse deep down in my soul and always will be. My husband came up with a new job description for me. It's in French, but translates to, "Keeper of the hearth and mama to the zoo." You know what? I'll take it and wear it's mantle proudly. sharpeimom + mama to five cats | | No. 44 |

Re: Nurse vs. Not
i understand where the OP is coming from.
i have NO problems with anyone who isn't involved in nursing posting here. let me just say that. i posted here as a paramedic before i became a nurse and you guys always were welcoming to me. and as a nursing student, this board is wonderful. nursing students are totally part of the group. and CNA's... i could not do my job without you guys.
so where i think eriks is coming from.... when you have a crappy day and post about stupid family members, stupid patients, stupid doctors and stupid job and you get a nursing student or a non-nurse say "omg, where's your compassion, i'm not ever gonna act like that. you people are terrible" (AND I HAVE SEEN POSTS LIKE THIS)... it makes you upset.
this is a great place to anyone to learn about nursing, discuss nursing, talk about being in nursing school, etc.... but aren't we judged and picked apart and stretched thin enough?
i had a heads up from working in a hospital as a tech before i became a nurse of what i was getting myself into. they don't teach you in nursing school or put in the "nursing is recession proof commercials" that you will be underpaid, understaffed, pooped on, peed on, kicked, punched, bitten (or gummed), abused by family members, embarassed by doctors, not take a pee or even have a granola bar for 12 hours sometimes.... and that's something you don't understand until you've been in the thick of things. i had a horrible assignment today and the poor PCT i worked with was in tears because she just couldn't catch up. we got through it, we worked together, but would i have loved to posted a "bang here" sign on the wall today...... yup.
i welcome all ideas and opinions and i have made friends with lots of non-nurses on here! but don't jump in the vent threads and comment on how "omg i can't believe you said that".... sometimes, you can't help it.
we're human too.
and erik, i hope you know that the yanks actually beat texas 11-1 yesterday. so there. | | No. 45 |

I agree with all of the above. I was a Certified Medical Assistant working while I did pre-reqs for nursing program. I worked in the Primary Care setting and urgent care, and trust me I worked hard, with some amazing nurses both RN and LPN. I imagine that there are some people who don't like my opinions. Cause amazingly enough I'm an opinionated cuss. But I have really enjoyed looking in on AN for a long time, and I enjoy the debates. No, I'm not a nurse...yet, but are we never to have debate, discussion and questioning? 'Cause that woudl be a serious bummer.
I suppose I should go back to lurking until I learn my place though.

That sounds an awful lot like me!!!
I got points for everybody, brought some people grades up even. And got explanations for things I was misunderstanding or had things stated correctly that were mistaken.
But I'll take odd for a poke, my skin is a little thicker than that.
I thought critical thinking was a positive quality in nurses, guess one should just take the info given without question, oh wait we are responsible for checking to see if orders are appropriate and safe...

Re: Nurse vs. Not
I'm with eriksoln. (I just got up a little while ago, so am jumping on the thread wagon now).
To have a nurse-access only area (Kinda like a pilots lounge.....?) to 'unwind' without having to sift through threads from the input of the "Nurses-are-supposed-to-be-pristine-as-the-driven-snow-and-always-perfect-" crowd, as well as the "I-want-to-be-a-nurse-therefore-my-advice-is-the-most-important-thing-to-be-addressed-right-now"'s....is NOT an unreasonable request.
Call the forum the "Breakroom". (wait....doesn't that already exist?) As it is goes out on the floors, family members (i.e. general public), are not allowed into the breakrooms of the staff.
Hey, just for ***** and giggles, you can put a 30 minute log on timer every 8 hrs before you get kicked out of the "Breakroom" just to "keep it real". LOL (Just kidding..............)
Truly, I say to you, it would not be that hard to set up a password protected sites for different disciplines. There doesn't have to be one for just the nurses........you could have a special site for the busdrivers and everyone else out there that wants to sign on to the site and get feedback about how it is to practice nursing now adays.
Threre has GOT to be a way to provide for this request. eriksoln, why don't you start an official poll and collect votes as to who would like to see this happen. Nothing speaks louder than the collective voices.
My two cents..

But I am for your efforts.
Can you put in the new TOS, that swearing is allowed? Some of us just cannot express our thoughts in earnest without dropping the F bomb (my favorite, or insert your words of choice), what ever they may be
Thank you.
Granny said "Profanity is ignorance made audible". I like it that we can't swear. I'm a member of my local newspaper and the forums there are simply awful - meanspirited - ugly - calling each other terrible names. That is not conducive to conversation. I rarely go there anymore.
And Boy oh boy, I have no idea what erik is talking about . ... . I've not noticed non-nurses (except students) coming here.
It seems the same to me.
