got my hip boots on

by canoehead Premium Member

I've been coming to Allnurses for years- more than ten years, cause I remember finding it before I moved to the USA, and being sooooo happy to be able to talk to peers without an agenda for my hospital.

I've hung in there through alot of upheavals and am almost tired of the board because I see the same stuff over and over again, NCLEX, BSN vrs RN, stressed students, stressed new grads, and do I have to touch anything gross if I'm a nurse (YES!! you will be able to gross out a platoon by the time you get out of nursing school, and it only gets better with age!)

Give us old fogies a way to wade through the sludge. New people deserve a spot to ask questions, but old cranky cannibal nurses deserve a spot too. I want to click down throught the threads and hit "ignore" just like I do with my spam email. Give me an icon that identifies me as old and cranky so the newbies know I'm cynical but experienced. (moldy nursing shoes would do it).

I can't get through all the new posts in one sitting on the computer- that says to me that I need to be able to weed something out. How can I do that?

I have been here about 5 years, under different screen names, and sometimes feel the same way. If the first page of new posts is ho-hum to me, I go to the "general nursing discussion" forum. That really narrows it down - gets rid of the school help q's, NCLEX, can-I-avoid-poop, and international nursing issues.

I LOVE this!!! I also don't like to wade through the NCLEX threads.

What about an "ignore this forum" button?

I don't subscribe to certain forums because I often find threads in other forums that I find interesting.

However, there are a couple that I really wouldn't mind never seeing again ....

(I'm glad they are there for those who need them, but .... it is almost like there is so much emotion there [like the NCLEX one] that just reading the thread titles can be draining)

Question Re: got my hip boots on
Strange. Kind of thinking something similar. But something that intrigues me? Wondering what has happened to the various people who used to post throughout the years. Some have disappeared altogether. Know that some have changed screen names. Others have been banned. But can't help but wonder what is so and so up to? Any interesting news? Just dropped off the face of the earth? Or are the job and family just that much more interesting that they don't spend time here anymore? Or maybe they lost their computer? Oh, well.

I have lurked around here for 5 years but just signed up in April (late bloomer). I notice that this time of year the "Should I become a nurse" threads start-many in one day. NO ONE seems to use search. People are thinking of going back to school I guess.
I also just realized that soooo many of the members that have been around forever are gone. At times the General Nursing Forum seems like New Grad forum. just my opinion.

I, too, lose my patience with the "Same old question ... my case is different" threads. No, they're not different. The OP just didn't want to do a search.

The problem is, you don't know where the good threads will turn up. So, I don't want to eliminate whole forums -- unless they could make a "same old topics forum" and we could all skip that one!

I never look at the NCLEX threads or others that I'm not interested in reading.

First thing I do is go to "My Account" and then click on "Subscribed Threads" to read the ones I've been interested enough in to post on. If I lose interest, I just unsubscribe.

Then I look at "New Posts". It is easy to just scroll down to see if anything new looks interesting.

Then I go to Current Events and Election 2008 and The Break Room.

There really is no way to not have threads started by newbies . . . I was there once myself about 6 years ago. In order to stop those threads comletely, you'd have to limit this website to only old fogey threads.

That would be very boring. I like the wide expanse of different threads available here. No one is going to be interested in every one.

Just think if our local libraries had the same idea . . . . get rid of the old classics and only stock brand new books. Which would be old in a few weeks then you'd have to toss them out.

I dunno - seems like you just shouldn't read the threads you are not interested in and let others read them if they want.

Never limit yourself . .. and let us not segregate ourselves.
