med/surg for LPNs after LTC?

U.S.A. Colorado

Published

I am looking for a more stimulating and challenging job.

I worked on a Surgical Unit in CA for 6 mos post LPN graduation. Took a year off for our little one, moved here to CO and started working LTC because it was close to home. It's a nice place to work but, there's 'no action'. I am not using my skills. I knew it was time to look for a new job when I got excited that I needed to straight cath someone. LOL The biggest thrill of my job now is wound care. I really want to be working with higher acuity patients.

Now I am looking for jobs and it seems very limited. I would prefer a hospital and most jobs appear to be in home care, temp agencies or clinics. The pay also seems very low. (??)

My question is what hospitals are hiring LPNs for med/surg?

I am also attending FRCC. I need Micro and then will sit on the wait-list forever;) Someday I 'll be a RN.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer my question!

I left LTC and came to Denver Health. Totally love it. The experience is amazing and the staff on the Med/Surg floors are great. 8A and Rehab are hiring LPN's right now.

I have known other LPN's who have moved to CO from other states and felt the same way you do....I guess CO has a much more restrictive 'scope of practice' for LPN's than other states.

The LPN-RN waitlist usually moves much faster than the traditional at FRCC. The Larimer FRCC campus admits 2x a year and I knew a LPN who only had to wait 1 semester after she finished her prereqs.

Thank you for your responses. I will definately have to check out Denver Health soon.

I was told by Carole Peters at FRCC Westminster that they haven't had any spaces for LPN to add into the 3rd semester ADN program in 2 years. She thought the Boulder campus in Longmont may admit more. I sent an email today re:Boulder.

Larimer campus is in Ft Collins right? That's quite a commute from Westminster. But, I guess if the waitlist is shorter than it may be worth it in the long run.

Any other great hospitals hiring LPNs?

Longmont is between Boulder and Fort Collins. Its not that far from Westminster. Larimer is in FT Collins.
