University of Colorado-Denver

by shan007

Hi neighbors, lol

I have a few questions.......I am a student at University of New Mexico about to graduate with my Biological Anthropology degree in spring 2010!! Since New Mexico only has a few i am applying to many nursing programs around my home state. So i am applying to the University of Colorado-Denver nursing school. I just had a few questions for those that are fimilar with the area and school.

1. I am applying to the accelerated BSN program. Does anybody know how competitve it is getting into the program?
2. Anything good or bad about the university of colorado-denver?
3. What about denver its self? hows the city? is the area nice around school?
4. Is the school nice?
5. Those that have been through the BSN or ABSN program, can you tell me the good or bad things?

I would appreciate any insight!!!!
Thanks

I haven't been there, but Ihave heard it is a very competitive school. But a very good school (one of my top choices). I know even with a BS you need certain prereqs...A&P I and II, micro and stats. And you need a pretty high science GPA. Not sure what, but I think they usually take people with 3.2 or 3.4 and higher. Check out there website for all the info, and they probably have a number or email of someone in admissions you can contact.

Oh, and congrats on your degree!! Why did you choose anthro? It is one of my favorite subjects, so I was curious.

I am in the school now. It is a fantastic program - the best in the area when I was researching where to go, and thus it was my top choice. It is brand new, and shares the campus with the University of Colorado Hospital as well as Children's Hospital.
It is extremely competitive - but that means that you are surrounded by the best and brightest in your classes. The professors are fantastic as well. Admission is based on grades (at least a 3.5 GPA) and essay highlighting your experience with diversity as well as motivation to become a nurse. The ABSN is even more competitive - they take about 50 people into that program each year. Almost everyone in the school has a previous degree but most end up in the traditional tract. For accelerated and traditional programs combined (because you all start in a cohort together) about 15% of applicants are accepted.
I don't know much about Denver area because I live in Boulder. The campus is not in an area of Denver where I would want to live though. It is a "commuter campus".
Hope that helps and good luck!

I am also currently enrolled there. It is very competitive, as stated above. At my orientation they told us that for each of us that were there, 10 other people were denied admission. It is an awesome campus, but the area around there is pretty sketchy. I live about 20 minutes away, but I do like living in Denver. There are a lot of great hospitals where we do clinicals, the mountains are close by and there is plenty to do in town. The new campus and buildings are pretty nice. A lot of the problems that other people on this site seem to have at their school don't seem to be a huge issue here. The professors and instructors want us to succeed. They don't try to make the students fail to weed people out. Every person that I know of that has dropped out, it has been because of a personal issue. It has something like a 98% pass rate on the NCLEX. I was in the accelerated program, but I decelerated (as they called it) because I had a baby and had to take a block of classes off- they are great about accommodating these things. Now I am graduating with the traditional students. The people in class are motivated and great to have in class.

There are a couple of negatives- the tuition is quite expensive, especially since you will be out-of-state. The accelerated program doesn't allow a lot of time for working, so I had to take out some private loans on top of the financial aid offered through the school and I work part time. The clinical office is ridiculously disorganized, probably due to the numbers of clinicals they are organizing. It gets a bit frustrating after the 5th time that you submit paperwork for a clinical or the 3rd time in a week that they changed your clinical time and date. There are a few online classes that are just ridiculous busy work and posting to the discussion boards about things that don't warrant that much discussion.

All in all, I would highly suggest that school and Denver!

Hi, I'm from Minnesota and was looking into this school. I did see that the tuition rate is incredibly high for out of state. Do they provide any grants or scholarships or is it all Stafford loans. From the sounds of it, you still needed to take out private loans on top of that...yikes, is it doable?

The provide grants if it is your first bachelors. You can apply for any scholarship. I also get alternative loans on top of Federal, and yes, it is expensive!
