UCHSC clinical question

Hi-
I am starting in the accelerated BSN program in June. I was curious as to when I would be starting clinicals. There was no information in the first two packets about clinicals. Based on what classes I am taking, I would assume I wouldn't start until the fall. I can't stop thinking about everything that is coming up and simultaneously being so excited I can't stand it, being terrified of what it will be like and stressing about paying for it all!

If anyone has ever started in the accelerated BSN in June, please let me know when you started clinicals.

Here are the classes that the accelerated class that started in January, 2008 had:
- Pathophysiology
- Pharmacology
- Health Assessment (1st half); Fundamentals (2nd half) both with 6-hour labs
- Professional Nursing (online course)

The clinicals for the above accelerated class have not started as yet; they are doing their Med/Surg 1 clinical this summer (Jun/Jul). It would follow that you as a fall-starting accelerated student won't start clinicals until the above classes are completed.

Oh, and relax a bit about what it will be like; it's a whole lot of work, but be confident that you can manage it and you will. The instructors are outstanding, as are the facilities. (As far as paying . . . can't help you there :-) )

I started the accelerated program last June. Here's what our schedule looked like:

Summer 07:
Pathophysiology
Heath Assessment
Professional Nursing (online only)

Fall 07:
Fundamentals (Block 1)
Med Surg I (Block 2)
Pharmacology

Spring '08:
Peds (Block 1)
OB (Block 1)
Med Surg II (Block 2)

I'm happy to answer more questions if you have them. Feel free to PM me. Try not to stress too much.

How many clinical sites are there to choose from for each class? Are there any hospitals that you would recommend or warn against for clinicals?
Also, for peds and ob do you get to spend any time in the picu or nicu, or do you have to request it for your senior practicum placement if you want that experience?

Each class has multiple sites to choose from, based on a lottery system. It just depends on how many people are in your class; the more people in your class, the more choices you have. I've had several good experiences that I'm happy to chat about if you'd like to PM me.

For peds, I was lucky enough to get my entire clinical in the NICU at Children's. It was random luck (and a great experience); everyone else got placed on a med surg floor, I think (but they also had good experiences.) They do allow senior practicums in the NICU, too, but I am not sure about the PICU. We did get to tour it (the PICU, that is) but I don't know about doing a clinical in there.

For senior practicum, my understanding is that you go through the lottery system like every other clinical, and then you request certain floors at the hospital you end up in. Sometimes they can place you, sometimes they can't; it just depends on whether the hospital can take you. For example, if you got placed at Children's, you could probably request placement in the PICU or the NICU. Don't know if that requires previous clinical experience on those units or not.

Hope that helps. Feel free to PM me with other questions.

Hey, Work in Progress, what health assessment lab did you sign up for? I'm in the tuesday afternoon section. I registered as soon as the system was open this morning, which turned out to be worth it, because that lab section filled up fast.
I'm starting to get really excited

I registered for the Wednesday morning lab. I had a problem that it wouldn't let me register for both the class and the lab. Is that normal? The lady hasn't called me back. I am so excited I have not been sleeping thinking about it all! I know I should try to get my sleep while I can. I just want to start already!

I had the same problem. I called Betty at the registrar's office (her number is on one of the forms with the registration instructions), and she added me to the lecture manually. If that's who you called, I would try calling her again. I wouldn't worry though, you've got your lab spot, which is what is important. I think someone must have messed up when they entered that course in the system, and I wouldn't be suprised if they just sent us all an email saying just to sign up for the lab and they'd fix it later.
