Pediatric Oncology nursing in Denver/Boulder

Hi there! I will be starting the Accelerated BSN at Regis in January '07, and I was wondering what the pediatric oncology RN job market is like in the Denver/Boulder area. I know Children's Hosp. Of Denver has a peds oncology unit, but are there any other facilites I should be aware of? Also, how difficult is it to get hired in oncology as a new grad? What are the shifts and starting salary like? Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!
~Fancy

Hi Fancy,

Besides Childrens, Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital in Denver also has as small Pediatrics Oncology unit on the general Pediatrics floor. I've had clinicals there and the staff is amazing, very receptive to students, and the floor does hire new grads. A new pediatrics wing is supposed to open soon (I think late 2007) so this may be an option for you. In checking the job market in Denver, the going rate for new grads ranges from $20-22/hr. This may be a litle different after you graduate, but should hopefully increase and not decrease!

Good Luck,

Michelle

Children's is definitely the main place for ped. oncology. As a new grad, it is to your advantage going to Regis if you want to work at Children's. Make sure you do your peds rotation there, and kiss major *** while doing that rotation. I'm not so sure they would hire you right into oncology, but getting a start in that hospital would best enable you to get there. good luck!
