nursing pre-requisite question

by amac71

Hi, I am going to be applying to UCHSC this fall. In planning my pre-reqs, should I take a basic biology course prior to taking A&P I? I do already have a BA degree but not in the sciences, if that makes a difference. It has been 15 years since I've been in school. I welcome any opinions!

thanks
Adrienne

Hi Adrienne,
You may want to post this under students, pre-nursing to get more response. I am taking AP1 through PCC and they have either Bio 105 or 105 as a pre-req to AP.
Good luck!

If you can find a school that will let you take A&P 1 without taking a bio prereq, you don't really need it. But I've been taking my prereqs (I also have a previous degree) at CC Aurora and they've been pretty picky about making sure I have the appropriate prereqs before letting me register for classes.

thanks, Dennis88, I'm looking at CC Aurora and CC Denver. Do you know about the statistics course MAT 135? Did they require a pre-req for that too at CC Aurora?

I know down at PCC (I think most of the CCs are the same, course wise) you just need completion of Mat 106 with a C or equivalent test scores (accuplacer). I'm going to be taking Mat 135 this fall (along with Mat 121, yuck!)

I took MAT 135 at CCA and they did verify that I had the prereq(s) before letting me register. I'm not sure what the prereq(s) are because I had taken a lot of math (like advanced calculus) when I got my undergrad degree so that satisfied them.

I too had been out of school for 15 years before taking A and P. It isn't necessary to take Biology unless the school requires it.

I took stats online through CCC online. They did verify that I had completed a college level math course as a prerequisite.

I tried to sign up for A & P online through ccconline (FRCC) Spring 09, and found that even though I had (long ago) taken the Bio prereq I would have to pass the placement test to be allowed to register. FRCC, at least, doesn't allow prereqs older than 7 years. I passed the placement test, but too late to register for A & P Spring 09--so I'll have to take it this summer.

The Biology placement test was *not* a piece of cake, by the way. I routinely ace SAT/GRE type tests, but only got a 78 on the Bio test. I'm glad to say that was high enough to pass. I got ahold of a Pearson online college bio text and studied for a night or two and I definitely would have flunked if I hadn't done that.

MAT 135 requires an accuplacer test, too.

Good luck!

thanks Dina, was the accuplacer test for the math as difficult as the BIO?

I hadn't had algebra in 20+ years, although I did mark my daughter's intro to algebra schoolwork (homeschooled). I took the accuplacer and got put into Mat 121, college algebra, so it wasn't too hard. I never took the Bio one so I can't compare those, sorry.
