The one thing that's bad about getting the federal funding to give out to students... the students will be able to live off them rather than paying for a private loans while going to school (which isn't a bad thing)... I just see loOoOng waits eventually at this school as well. I went to DSON and graduated Dec.07. Sucks for students...good for the school!!
Good luck to all, I really got a lot out of DSON!

The downside is until they get the NLN accreditation, the BSN won't be accepted for application at NP or other master's level programs. So if that is something you are considering, you need to include that in your decision.
I know at least for the UC Health Science Center they WILL accept non-certified schools as long as they are certified by the Colorado board. I double checked everything because I eventually want to do a ADN-MA program and wanted to be sure my stuff will transfer.

On the USHSC website their admissions requirements for masters' degree programs include this:

"A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution with an upper division major in nursing, an entry level doctor of nursing, or a generic master’s degree in nursing from an NLN or CCNE accredited program"

From the University of Northern Colorado website:

"A bachelor's degree in nursing from an NLN or AACN accredited institution (from vita or resume)"

DSON doesn't meet any of these requirements. For me, that's a deal-breaker for DSON--because USHSC and UNC won't be the only colleges with those graduate-level requirements.

But that might not be a deal-breaker for others; just some info for those who find it useful.

I don't think this is correct information. Most Universities will not accept non-NLN or CCNE accredited schools for their Masters program. Although as said before, DSON is working on NLN accreditation currently.

State approval of a school's nursing program by the BON is NOT accreditation. If you want to continue to an advanced degree make sure the program is accredited by the NLN or the other nursing accreditation board (can't think of the name).

From the UCHSC website-
Associate degree in nursing from an NLN-accredited institution. You must submit proof of the NLN accreditation. For associate degrees in nursing from a Colorado institution, the Colorado State Board of Nursing approval will suffice.

The way I read that document, it only applies to this one specific program if you have an associate's degree in nursing. Here's their general graduate program requirement:

MS Program Admission Requirements
  1. Completion of all requested application materials
  2. A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution with an upper division major in nursing, an entry level doctor of nursing, or a generic master’s degree in nursing from an NLN or CCNE accredited program.

I had some questions about DSON as well. Do you have to have pre-reqs done for the RN program? Also is there a long waiting list and how long until you find out you're accepted?

I talked to them a couple of months ago about their BSN program, IlikeBob. Yes, you do have to have the pre-reqs done before you start. However, you can be in the process of finishing them when you apply. I am going to be contacting them at the first of July to take the test and apply for the Jan 10 cohort, but my pre-reqs won't be done until Dec. I am hoping I can take Patho before the first quarter so I can get a slightly easier start, so you can do that one either way.

For the BSN they have 4 cohorts a year so that's nice (sorry, can't remember how many for the ASN off the top of my head), but as is my case, you should apply for it about 6 months in advance. You can download their catalog off their site and it should give most of the info you need, on both the ASN and BSN programs. The admissions people were a big help to me. I faxed them a copy of my transcripts to make sure I had what I needed because my classes are old and I wanted to make I met the requirements. All is well and I am very excited.

Hope that gives you a little bit of info to start you off with. Let us know what you decide!

Good luck!

I just started the BSN program at DSN today. I like it a lot so far, I am very happy with my decision to go there!
