EMT route??????

Here's my skinny--

I live in the mountains in Breckenridge. I am faced with either going to school in Denver for LPN (God willing that I can get in!) or enrolling in CMC (Colorado Mountain College in Breck) for EMT with the hopes that I can get in the the hospital setting with an EMT. Would prefer to further my education to an RN, that is my goal.

What can anyone tell me about going this route with EMT liscensure? What about pay?

A new Hospital is opening up in December in the Breck area and would love to get in but as of this point have no skills related to the hospital industry.

What do ya think?

I have called CMC with these questions and have not received a call back ------

What can you all tell me about this route?

Thanks in advance for any replies!!!!!!

Dawn in Breckenridge (not KC anymore as my username implies)

Hi Dawn,
I used to live in Breck and worked at VVMC (Vail hospital), as an RN. Most of our PCP's (nurse assistants), were EMTs. The mountain living seems to draw more of that type than CNAs. Although your EMT courses will not transfer to the nursing curriculum, it is still not a bad way to go as there probably is no waiting list for that program........and actually your prereqs of A&P would be applicable to nursing. Plus working as an EMT/PCP would be great experience for when you do get into nursing school. You may want to get on that nursing school list ASAP as I believe it is lengthy. I didn't realize the new hospital in Breck is opening so soo......hmmm....I wouldn't mind working there... I live in Golden now and would be happy to help you with any other questions.

Thanks for the reply!! CMC has an EMT class here in Breck starting this fall- I'll have to jump on that. The nearest CNA class is in Leadville. I spoke to the head of HR at Centura St Anthony's (in Frisco) a few days back and he told me that the new hospital will take their first patient in December. The new hospital is between the Frisco Government Development (where the library is) and Summit High. I hope by that time I will be far enough along in the EMT course to get a job!!!

Thanks for your info--- Can you tell me what I can expect as far as pay is concerned?

Maybe we will be working together in the future?! This is such a WONDERFUL site to share info...Hope I've helped in some way Dawn

Don't know about CO, but in Texas an EMT needs to become a Paramedic before applying for RN bridge program. Many do just that and it shortens their schooling plus they get valuable experience. What would we do without EMT's and Paramedics?

Good to know! I'll keep this in mind when inquiring about my EMT-B program, the instructors could tell me more on this I'm sure----
