CSU Pueblo or Beth-EL

Hi all,

I'm applying to both CSU_Pueblo and Beth-El accelerated nursing programs. I don't live in Colorado right now, so I don't have much information on either besides what's on the websites. I'm moving there in August and would like to know a few things such as:

Pueblo - What would the commute be like from Colorado Springs? Especially during the winter. I live in Northern VA/DC area right now and can deal with traffic, but not so sure about driving in a lot of snow. Also, I see that Pueblo students haven't done so well in terms of NCLEX testing, is there anyone here that could shed some light. Say, maybe from one of the previous graduating classes. Do you feel as though this was the school's fault for not preparting the students as well or the individuals? There is obviously something wrong. What do hospitals say about Pueblo nursing students?

Beth-El - Is this program extremely competitive to get in? What do hospitals say about Beth-El's students? How are students accepted? GPA? Interview? Essay?

Thanks!!

I went to Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs, so I really can't tell you much about Beth-El students. We ran into them during our clinicals and they seemed to be prepared just as well as we were. They were a younger crowd than my class. Our average class age was early-thirties.

I did a set of clinicals at the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo, and it took me about an hour to get there. The drive is on a decent highway, and if you're experienced with driving in snow, you shouldn't have any troubles.

I wish I could help you more. Good luck.

I can't really tell you anything about either school, but I would say that I, personally, would not choose to live in the Springs if I was going to school in Pueblo. During good weather it's not a horrible drive, but during snow/ice, it can be really ugly. Pueblo doesn't get as much snow as the Springs can, but the wind and temperatures can make for really horrible driving conditions.

Where ever you choose to go to school, I would really recommend living nearby...I'm a Colorado native and have lived in both Pueblo and the Springs.

Best of luck!!!!

Do not go to CSU_Pueblo. They have very few experienced teachers and almost no experience clinical preceptors. Pueblo is not a very friendly town and CSU-P deserves their low NCLEX pass rate. They seem to have forgotten that their students are paying them for an education. Their attitude is that "you're lucky" to be here. It's easy to get in...they're happy to take your money. It is just so frustrating when you're there. They are very disorganized and place the responsibility for their errors on the students. If you think you would like the army, go to Pueblo. If you want a good nursing school experience, go somewhere else. It will be worth the wait.

Take if from one who knows.

Beth-El is getting rid of the waiting list by administering an entrance exam, the HESI-A2. Before you can take the exam, you have to take your first year pre-reqs like A & P, general psychology, developmental psychology, two semesters of chemistry, two semesters of college english, cultural anthropology, nutrition, and a gen-ed elective. Beth-El also wants a minimum 3.3 GPA, so no less than A or B in all those pre-reqs. You can find more information here: http://www.uccs.edu/~bethel/bsn.htm.

Wow, is Pueblo that bad? I considered applying there if Beth-El didn't work out, but now I'm so glad I didn't have to.
