I was wondering if anyone has attempted to excise themselves from the CNA union? Is it possible? If so, how do I go about it?

I do not union sympathize, but I am unionized. A union was originally designed to go to bat for people that cannot or will not standup for themselves..DEEP eh!? And administrators will actually talk to the staff.

If management was nice to their staff, you would not need a union. You pay union dues for an elected member of your staff and local office to talk with management, about problems encountered.

As for co-workers, welcome to the politics of the office scenerio. You have good staff, you have politicing staff.

Get used to it, its the real world.

Secondly, as far as pay and benefits, the non-union facilities here make as much if not more than us. Without paying the 75.00/month. .

THEN GO WORK THERE AND STOP YOUR INCESSANT WHINING.

You didn't come here to discuss union or nursing issues, you came to push your delusional Fox News conservative agenda.

There are plenty of non-union places to work in this country. I suggest you go work there.

Whining? I think not. Just stating a position. I don't watch Fox News, in fact, I rarely watch TV at all. And, as a matter of fact, my facility will be non-union soon :)

IF all your complaining about is $75/month ($20/week)...then GO! we also wish not to read about your personal life stuff. If you dont like where you are working, tis a free country (last time I looked), look elsewhere.

Everyone has right to an opinion, whether that opinion in YOUR terms, stinks...well, thats YOUR opinion.

If you are unhappy with your union , do the same as those who were previously unhappy with the management of your facility did , ie. mobilise those at your facility oppossed to the union , when you have enough people interested seek a vote to decertify the union representing you .Use the democratic system to gain what you want . Or are you saying that when the vote goes against you , you should behave like a two year old , sulk in a corner and say how badly you are treated and refuse to play .

Something I don't get about RTW is that the law is set up to make unionization difficult , but that it mandates when a service is offered ( and accepted in a free vote ) it must be provided freely to those who will accept the benefits of the service but are not prepared to pay for it .It would be wonderful if the politicians in those states would also allow their voters to opt out of paying for whatever tax paid services they provided eg. don't think roads need maintainance , cut that portion from your tax payment etc.

We are unhappy with the union, and are taking steps to rid our facility of these pests. The petitions to decertify will be circulating beginning in August of this year, as our "contract" expires in November. Hopefully we will ring in 2013 by sending the SEIU (Serving Employers Instead of US) packing. It is looking great so far :)

If you follow the proper steps ( is there a reason to wait until August ?) then I will not argue against your choice of action . If the union representing you is doing a poor job , then it deserves to be kicked out .

Whilst I am pro union , I have heard that your representation of the SEIU is accurate , which is the reason that if an employer can choose its union , that is their choice . Remember though as in employers , not all unions are the same , so if you are not against unions ( eg. don't fit your political beliefs ) then look at other unions that represent nurses .

Also if your employer was good to all your fellow nurses , the union would not have got enough to vote for it to get in . Has your employer changed its ways , if not what will you do in future to ensure that you and your fellow employees will create a better work enviroment in which most employees will be happy to work ?

when getting rid of the union, make sure you approach your administration. Most small places with out a union, get along better as long as administration is approachable and open door policy. If your part of a chain of hospitals, you need to talk with the boss of the chain, not the local rep boss.

I think although administration may wish the union to be decertified , it is probably something they would not wish to become directly inolved in and it may even be illegal for them to do so .

If a facility became unionised , it was because the employees were either unable to approach admin or it was unreceptive to those approaches . So before decertification you need to be very sure that admin will in future be interested in it employees or you will return to a situation as bad as if not worse than before a union was in place .

We are required to wait until 90 days before the expiration of the contract to begin efforts to decertify. SEIU is not a nursing union, and isn't even really a healthcare union. The local at our facility has over 1400 members. We have not had a union meeting in 3 years, even though the local's charter requires it. When questioned about the lack of meetings, lack of representation, etc., the local replies "nobody comes to them anyway". The SEIU takes in over 1 million dollars per year in dues from just this facility. Oddly enough, we are the only unionized RNs in this area, but we are the lowest paid RNs working in a level one teaching facility.
