Workng 1 day per week

by tbradnc

I am going to be starting work on my ADN at the local community college this semester. In the meantime, I am thinking about taking the CNA class which also starts in January.

However, I already have a full time job so after obtaining my CNA license I'm not interested in a full time job as a CNA - I have a family and could never maintain our standard of living as a CNA.

I'm wondering if it is possible to work for a facility as a CNA for as little as 1 day per week (perhaps PRN) - mainly to get some experience and learn skills that will be useful in a nursing career.

Yeah, I know people who do it.

Right now, I'm only working 2 days a week myself.

Depends on what the market is like is your area which I cannot guess at. There are certainly PRN jobs out there. Based on my experence, 1 day a week will be difficult. A couple days a week, especially if you're interested in weekends which are often short staffed, would be more likely in this area.

But, as a general rule, there is a pretty fair amount of flexibility in scheduling if there is a shortage of CNAs.

You are more likely to get one shift a week if you approach a facility asking for Friday night through the weekend. These are the shifts that are the hardest to cover and most likely to have openings, either permanent or as on-call.

That's kind of what I figured. And, it would work well for me because I already work during the week.
