When is appropriate to apply for jobs?

by JessLP

Hi everyone,

My boyfriend signed up for a 3 week long CNA class that starts on August 4. He's a security guard and really doesn't like his job. He's really excited about starting in the health care field!

I've been trying to help him with some research, but some things have me stumped. Before he signed up for the CNA class he did some looking around the market to see what the job market was like. We found a variety of hospitals, agencies, and other medical centers looking for CNAs. His question right now is: When is it appropriate to apply for jobs? Should he wait until he has his license in his hand? Should he wait until he's in class? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Jess

It all depends on the facility. Most hospitals won't even look at you unless you have your certification, while some LTC facilities would be willing to hire an uncertified person and train them on the job. You pretty much just have to look at each potential employer's job requirements. I think it's becoming increasingly common for places to list "current and valid CNA certification" as a requirement, though.

I would think once he graduates the class he can start applying. That way he's got a foot in the door so to speak, so once he gets his cert he can work legally as a CNA. He could put on the application the date he finishes his classes with an expected date of testing for the cert.

I recently graduated my LPN schooling. I applied for a position in a local LTC facility. I was hired as a GPN. They asked that I just bring in my diploma (which when I applied I hadn't received because the Graduation cermony awarding diplomas wasn't until last evening). Once I pass my boards my title will go from GPN to LPN. if I fail my Boards (God forbid) I will loose that position, be "demoted", pay will be reduced to that jobs pay scale and work at that lower position until I test and pass.

Thanks for the help!

How long does it usually take from time of testing (and passing) until the state recognizes that you're a CNA?
