Is BSN worth it? IMHO...education is great, higher education is better!!! The more you learn the more versatile you will be. Now, IF you know that you just want to do bedside nursing or something else not requiring a BSN then it would be ok and "financially" better to go the ASN route; however, even if you don't "need" your BSN, the knowledge you will gain will be worth it.
As for nursing "...would eat my life and all my free time...", let me tell you. Working three days and having four days off can't be beat!!!! Yes, school takes up a lot of time, but it goes quickly.
