question about volunteering...

If you volunteer for a hospital and you want to work there. How long do you volunteer before you apply for a job. I would like to work at this one hospital it is right in town here. It is a small hospital so not sure exactly how they work with this type of stuff. So was wondering if anyone had any tips. thanks

I'd say that you could apply right away! Now, for some, it may be easier to get the job if you volunteer, make some contacts, and then apply for a job. If people see how professional and hardworking you are as a volunteer, they are more likely to recommend you for a job. It helps to have people already employed by the hospital to serve as a reference on a job app. Also, you can make a name for yourself in the hospital..."That mike is always smiling and friendly with the patients and staff." "Julie is always helpful. I can tell that she is passionate about helping others." These statements will help you get the job. Plus, by being in the hospital as a volunteer, you are more likely to hear about jobs that are not yet posted to the public. I wish you lots of success!!

I just applied as a hospital volunteer myself...

From what I gathered from fellow students, my volunteer interviews, and instructors, volunteering is a great way to "get your foot in the door". A few classmates who work or volunteer at hospitals in town have already been promised jobs upon graduation...in 2010! The volunteer staff I spoke to said that because I was in nursing school, they would try to place me in a position with patient contact like floor help or transport, which gives you a) patient experience (however mild) and b)lets the floor staff get to know you, both of which can help you get a job. Plus, even if you don't get a job at *that* facility, hospital volunteer looks great on a resume.

Good luck!
