Hello everyone! I am in Queens, NY too. Just passed my state exam! One small step in my new career path....... also plan on going for a BSN

I have my first interview coming up this week..... a little nervous, even though I have interviewed hundreds of CNA's and Nurses when I worked in HR.... I'm used to asking the questions, not answering them!!!

It has been a frustrating couple of weeks though.... with hiring freezes, and 2 hospitals closing in Queens, it does not seem to be the best time for us to be job hunting.......especially as newbies!!

Congrats to you on your progress!!! I live in Queens, NY also and just started class last night. I am concerned as well about the hiring freezes. Please keep me posted on your continued progress. I also plan to continue on for my BSN.

I reside in Queen, NY. I just started my CNA class last night. My class will end on April 10th and then my internship will begin. I plan on proceeding on to pursue a certifcation as a Nursing Technician and then on to my BSN with no date confimed as yet. I was fortunate enough to be able to obtain an educational grant from the department of labor that covered all of the cost for my class.

Hi all. I reside in manhattan. Just finished my cna course at manhattan institute in December and passed the state boards in Jan. I have started sending out applications and applying like crazy and still nothing. The only ones paying attention are the agencies and the pay is less than what I made as a direct care worker. Its getting pretty tiresome and a little depressing not getting any callbacks due to all the closings and hiring freezes. Im not giving up and have been networking like crazy. I'm looking out for all the open houses in the tri-state area. Good luck everyone and great thread!!

I'm planning on moving back to Brooklyn and I am curious about what I should expect in terms of work environment in LTC. LTC is pretty "rough" and Brooklyners are known for being tough so does that mean that
I should be prepared for a rough/tough ride as a a CNA in LTC? In other words, harsh LPN's, rude co-workers, etc.

Have you been job hunting since Jan with nothing!??? I keep thinking maybe next week it will be better..... didn't expect to be searching for months though.....

I posted this under another thread... but thought I'd repeat some of it here...


I am very frustrated right now. I finished my CNA classes/ineternship Dec. 17th, waited 2 months to get a NY State exam date... passed my test and have been job searching for the last few weeks.

I am used to working hard to track down jobs and am not surprised by the amount of time I am putting in searching, I am however surprised at the lack of calls and interviews. I have had 1 interview (last week) and it was only for PerDiem work. I know I am a brand new CNA with no experience, but I still thought the job prospects would be a bit better than they are......I've been trying to go for just LTC figuring it was my best shot.

I'm very lucky though that I live with my bf who can cover the rent right now, but not my ideal situation! I don't want to keep taking advantage of that for much longer! I feel sooo bad, this was not my plan.

Sorry for the bit of venting there..... just feeling very frustrated!!!

I am looking for CNA programs in NYC. Preferrably in Manhattan or the Bronx. I already tried contacting several programs but they are not working with my current schedule and other commitments.
I have looked through BCC, Lehman and Hostos.
I see that some of you have gone to the Manhattan Institute, I didn't know that this was an accredited program. I looked through a New York state webstite that had listed programs in NYC but it didn't list the Manhattan Institute. Any more info about their program would be greatly appreciated.
How about the Mandl school. I am meeting with them tomorrow to discuss cost but I have heard that their program is expensive...is this the case? Any other programs out there that I haven't listed.

@lola.. State exams are held at Manhattan Institute regularly, so I beleive they are accredited by the state. They are listed on Prometrics website with pass/fail specs school by school, facility by facility. I had a very good instructor, I took the day course and was done in about 5 weeks and then my clinicals after. They offer Sat and Sun courses and evenings too. There is also ABC in the Bronx and a BOCES program that Ive heard of. Not sure about Mandl though. I think prices have gone up across the board becase of the times and the demand.


@KatyCar....YUP!! I have been searching since I received my cert in hand and just recently bit the bullet and signed up with an agency; crappy hours and lousy pay for a whoooleee lot of work. I have only weekends for now and its crazy the amount of residents I have per shift, its 8 res to 1 aide . I am literally running through my shift. I am never on the same floor on any given shift so getting to know the residents is out of the window. This is so not the way I envisioned my first position to be. A lot of the faclities are using agency staff to fill vacancies and freezing hirings to full time permanent staff. The only good thing about it is that the regular staff and the nurses are pretty cool and supportive for the most part. Still putting in the applications at other facilities non stop. I am not giving up this recession cant go on forever...I hope. Stay positive. Good luck
