Hello to all. I am from the Bronx beginning my CNA classes in May. I am going to New Age Training. Its on 8th Ave between 35th and 36th. They have reasonable fees and also offer a flexible schedule. Full time days, nights, weekends classes. They also offer a combination CNA+PCT class for about $2400 I believe. Its 8 weeks long if you go fulltime. I also would like to let all of you prospective CNA's know that, depending on your family size, if you make less that 56,000 a year, you may be eligible for a grant from Workforce 1 that will cover your costs for up to $3,800. Contact your local office for more details. Its not hard to get at all. They just want you to take a few short classes and do some research and you can qualify for the grant. Its one of those hidden options for those of us who cant afford CNA classes. Here is the website. Small Business Services - Workforce1. Also the Manhattan Educational Opportunity Center also offers free classes for low income students. You have to take a TABE test and some interviews. They have a test date coming up for April 17th, so jump on it if you can. The Manhattan Educational Opportunity Center They have summer classes starting in June. Good luck to you all and hope to see you in the field soon. Oh and by the way, dont expect to land that awesome job at first. If you have to go through agency or LTC then so be it. Its hard getting a job in healthcare when you have no experience so just be thankful if you get in somewhere. Work your way from the bottom up and it will be worth it. Once you get some experience, it will be much easier. Just be patient. Good things come to those who wait.

Hello everyone! I am in Queens, NY too. Just passed my state exam! One small step in my new career path....... also plan on going for a BSN

I have my first interview coming up this week..... a little nervous, even though I have interviewed hundreds of CNA's and Nurses when I worked in HR.... I'm used to asking the questions, not answering them!!!

It has been a frustrating couple of weeks though.... with hiring freezes, and 2 hospitals closing in Queens, it does not seem to be the best time for us to be job hunting.......especially as newbies!!

Good luck to all you NYC CNA's!

So how is everything working out for you?

Toward the end it got better, but you can tell she was wiped out. I paid the $999 and not surprised they raised it. Good Luck to everyone!!!!!
When are you taking State Boards?

Next week I begin my Internship @ the VA Hospital. I will be blogging daily about it on my Live Journal, so if anyone is on Live Journal and wants to see a document of my experience, send me a message/PM.

The Internship is from 8AM-3PM Monday-Thursday
. The following Monday, we go back to school to Pre-Test (Written) for the State Board Exam, and if we pass the written Pre-Test, we will schedule the clinical Pre-Test the same day. If both Pre-Tests are passed successfully, we can then schedule State Boards that will be taken @ our school facility. My Nurse Tech/PCT Class starts May20Th- Will probably be over in July.

Hopefully I can be up and running with a job by the summer!

Hello everyone. I'm from the Bronx and am considering taking a CNA job to get me through LPN school which starts in September. It seems like a quick way to get experience in the field. I was even more intrigued when a friend told me starting pay was $15, but when I look around, all I am seeing is $12. If it's $12, then I will probably just keep the job I have now and not spend $1200 on the class. I made a post about this earlier today but so far no one has answered. So I was hoping that maybe you guys can tell me what your knowledge of the CNA salary is in our area.

Thanks and good luck on your classes!!

Yea, $12-$13 seems to be the average in NYC. Although, if you work night's and/or weekends @ some facilities you may be able to make $15 w. shift differential's.

Love Re: NYC CNA's
I just finished my Internship @ the VA Hospital yesterday; it was a wonderful experience! I cried many times and the residents "go home w. you" after your clinical rotations. Needless to say, I grew so attached to the resident's, that I am going to start volunteering there; I will be handing in my volunteer application next week right after I take my school's Pre-Test! After I pass the Pre-Test, then it's time to take State Boards!

1. I got into a Free HHA program yesterday sponsored by Partners in Care! Starts May 11Th 8AM-4:30PM Monday through Friday for 3 weeks. It's pretty neat because that certificate never expires, the agency has 1199 etc. and I can work as a HHA while I take my PCT ( Patient Care Technician: EKG & Phlebotomy course- which will end in August), then try and apply for a hospital job w. the following credentials.

a. PCT Certificate - Makes me worth $15-$20HR where I live.
b. CNA Certificate/ License: I'm still waiting to take State Boards, BTW - Makes me worth $13-$15 HR where I live.
c. HHA Certificate - Worth $8HR where I live.
d. CPR Certificate - Needed to work in Healthcare.

* If all goes well, I should be ready to apply for a CNA/PCT position by September of this year.

2. I was supposed to start my PCT course May 20Th. Do you guys think I will be able to take both classes, or should I start the PCT in June when the HHA is complete?

3. I got a chance to hand in my volunteer application for the VA Hospital yesterday as well; wouldn't mind working there. That's where I did my Internship and they have great benefits.

Next year, I start my LPN school application process.

Does anyone have any suggestions/ commentary?
