Not sure what to do...

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a little help. I completed a Red Cross Chha/CNA course, which included a week of Skill testing & a week of clinical. At the end we had two written exams....It was my understanding, that at the completion I would be certified. What i found out is now I must take a state exam...has anyone else encountered this? I thought for 800 dollars and four --forty hour weeks, I'd have something to show for it in the end. One more question, If I must take a State exam, does it have to be for Mass or can I take it in NH to be a LNA? Thank you for any info..

Its my understanding that every state has its own required exam. I think all states have a written part and a clinical part. As far as taking it for other states, I don't think thats true. Some states offer reciprocity for certification from other states but I don't think its possible to complete training in one state and then go directly to another and take the exam. Don't feel so bad about having all the training, in NC where I am it goes on the state registry that you completed a training course and didn't just challenge it on your own. A big help in getting a job.

Yes that is standard. I took my first class with the Red Cross in MA in 1995 and thats how we did it. The class just gives you the right to submit your application to your state board of nursing for a test date to be certified. You can ask the BON of NH if you can submit your application to them, they may recognize the Red Cross Program as proper training to meet the requirements to test.

Certified: To issue a license or certificate to.

That definition stands to reason that there has to be some sort of standard test be it statewide or nationwide in order to maintain the same standard everywhere as not all schools are the same caliber.
