Did you ever go into healthcare? If so how's that working for you. I just dropped out of dental hygiene and I'm getting into the LNA program. I need something that I can accomplish in less than 2 months while giving me an opportunity to explore the fiel and make sure that's what I want to do.

WOW, I am glad I found this post as it sure makes me feel better... I worked in the medical field as a pharmacy tech/hopital buyer for years, then about 10 years ago I was offered a well paying job at a large tech company.. Well since then I have worked as an Executive Asst/Analyst for 10 years. I LOVE them medical field and really missed, but working so much and getting paid over $40K a year going back was hard to justify.. Well, got laid off in March -- now everyone wants me to do the same job I have been but for $20K a year.. no way!!
I hate being behind a desk all day, getting lazy, out of shape..working for the big man, no real purpose.
I knew I wanted to be a nurse since I was 9 (my grandmother was a nurse, had patients living in her home and I always helped)! Well, as I am collecting unemployment and do not have a degree my school is being subsidized.. BONUS! So I start CNA school Monday, then onto Phlebotomy school, then LPN in Jan 2010. I am excited but a little nervous about the unknown -- hoping I am making the right decision.. good luck to you all -- please let me know how it goes for you.

I didn't quit, but I was laid off right before taking my class. Right out of high school I went into my local cc and started taking prereqs for nursing school. I ended up pregnant two months into my first semester. So I dropped out, got an admin job, and always wished I would have stayed in school. Now my son is 3 and half and I decided to take another stab at it. I hated being an admin and I think it showed in my job performance. I'm glad I got laid off, even though I found another job doing admin and I give my notice on Monday because an LTC has decided to hire me as a CNA. I'm so happy that I have the chance to start back towards my dream. While it is the long way around from what I originally started doing, I'm going to get there some day

I wish you the best of luck and I truly think if this is your dream you should definitely follow it!!!

I definitely can relate. I received a BA degree specializing in HR. After years of working in the corporate world I felt bored and it was not challenging. I pursued my CNA license and I currently work as a CNA while taking my science pre reqs. I found that there was no challenge sitting at a desk all day. I like that there is no limit to nursing and it is challenging. You made a good decision.

I only wish my STUPID, STUPID non considerate blood suckers (if they could they would) unprofessional, but they want to call them selves the "All American City Of ???" place of employment would just let me go so I could collect unemployment while I pursue my REAL rewarding career as a which I know I'm going to love!!!
Well I finished my CNA class about 8 months ago and it did usher me into the health care field. It was tough in the beginning because I couldn't find a job so I just kept applying and applying to any and every job. The best advice I can give is find an evening CNA class. Keep your job until you find a job in health care. I really like my job now. I'm making less money than I did at my other job, but I'd rather help an elderly person sing happy birthday than run excel reports and stare at a computer all day.

I was making $39/hr as a science substitute teacher. In September, we received a notice stating that we weren't going to be needed untill the end of October.

I took a seven-week CNA class and didn't return to substitute teaching.

It is so amazing how many of us are in the same boat or feel the same way.
I start CNA school tomorrow, I am pretty excited, just trying to get all my paperwork in by the deadline for the LPN class.. I have felt so worthless in my job as an Admin and knew it was just a fill in. My husband has a 2yr and is now almost done with his 4yr - taking online classes at SPC. One day he said to me.. "so, what are you going to do for the rest of your life".. WOW - that stopped me dead in my tracks. I am so thankful to have this opportunity handed to me and I guess getting laid off was not the end of the world.. seems to be the beginning!!
Please let me know what you all decide to do, I will let ya'll know how the first day was...

you sound like me. I left my job as a document services clerk for a year. I was bored out of my mind. I second guess the decision I made daily. Hopefully it was the right one. I want to do something to help people, so that's why I left the computer/desk job for a more meaningful one.

Wow! I am so happy to read your post. I too thought that I was the only one that would give up my good paying job to do CNA then RN. Most of my family also think I am crazy but for years I have been wanting to get into health care and thought I was too stupid to do it. We just relocated to a new area as my husband just got out for the military and now that he is getting settled in his new job, it is MY TURN! I am too sick of sitting on my butt all day doing the same thing over and over again. I wish you the best of luck and keep us posted!

I sure hope you proceed with CNA school.. Granted today was the first day of school, but I loved it!! I know I am going to love it.. It was so interesting, I think it will make you feel like you actually made a difference in someones life at the end of the day.. You can do it!!! Get a good study guide, take good notes, you will be great!
