I think it means basic lifesaving skills, it's like a CPR/lifesaving rescuer class, but I'd still call for clairification, and ask if the facility offers the program.

BCLS is a certification that is offered through the AHA. It covers basic heart saver, two person rescue, infant and child CPR, and obstructed airway. Where I work, they require this certification and will not accept any other, like the Red Cross certification.

All these answers are right on. The only thing I could add would be - BCLS stands for Basic Cardiac Life Saving or BLS is used sometimes.

I went thru redcross for school and CPR for the professional rescuer,we did all that vmoh named and learned the AED ,so I dont see why it wouldnt be accepted,I paid $20.00 extra bucks for the pro cpr,so I would have it.

I also went through the Red Cross training for school, but when I went for my interview for work they told me that they would not accept my certification. When I asked why they told me that they require BCLS from the AHA and could not accept it. I'm not saying every employer is like this, but mine is.

It seems like a lot of employers in my area also only accept certification from AHA. I got mine from AHA (they came to my school) and luckily we were offered the class for free.

My employer offered us the class we needed upon hire. It was through the AHA, but it was free for us.

If people have Red Cross certification (for HW), they only have to take the AHA BLS recert instead of the whole 5 hour class. Small consolation.
