Crying........

Updated Dec 24, 2008 at 07:52 AM by CNAMichelle

TRYING NOT TO SPEND MY Christmas eve crying,I know thats silly I am a grown woman....IN SHOCK! I actually failed the skills test yesterday! I feel like such a failure! one of my skills was bed bath and I forgot to wash the"dummy's" back!:bang head: and to make matters worse,I had to play the patient right after I found out I failed,so I set there and cried in front of the tester.......I FEEL LIKE SUCH AN IDIOT! I was so proud of myself for having the highest gpa in class(big deal to me,cause I thought I would struggle, since I've been out of school 24 yrs) now my confidence is SHOT! sorry for whining, just really needed to vent! thanks for listening,Michelle
ps. I have a huge Christmas eve party every year, now I dread it! OMG! there will be 60 people here asking how I did......hangs head in shame!

MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL!

Sounds like you need one of these!

Dont fret it hun. If you passed all the tests and had a good score in the class then Im sure you can attribute this to nerves. During my skills test, I forgot to put on the patients shoes and socks when I got them dressed. Luckily, my instructer was the evaluator and she gave me a gentle hint.

It happens. Its a foriegn situation and made even more nerve wreaking when you arent actually performing skills on a patient, but an actor. Those things you may forget now are not things you will logically forget in a job setting.

Just suck it up a bit, apply to re-take the test, and move on. ::Hugs::
And Im sorry about the party! I would try to keep it really light and laugh it off.

Hello CNA2B!

Not to worry! You'll be fine next time. The pass rate on the skills test is somewhere around 50% on the first try, so don't feel alone or discouraged. You only cried because you care so much and that is a good thing. Practice skills with live people when you can.

Try counting how many steps are in every skill and memorize them. If you do, the next test will a pass with flying colors.

Keep us up to date. When can you retest?

You probably were just nervous. Forgive yourself, pick yourself up and try again.

Merry Christmas to you too!

Try, try again. You'll be fine. Tests can rattle the nerves. I agree with 13 above... make a list of the steps and memorize them.

Don't be too hard on yourself...that's what these tests are for.. to help you to do better and better.

Crying,
Try again! Try not to dwell on this snag and just do it again. I know one thing that helped me out was talking my way through each step as I completed each skill. Weird but it worked.

Good luck!

Mmhmm, as everyone has said, IT HAPPENS. It is so nervewracking, doing those things while someone scrutinizes your every move. Most people who fail do it for a reason just like you - got nervous and forgot a small step. Let's be honest, in real life, you probably wouldn't forget to do something like that! Don't beat yourself up. If you read through some threads on here, quite a few people have been through the same thing.

The good thing is, when you retake it, I bet you'll be extra careful.

I'm so sorry. It stinks. I know you're hurting and feeling bad but remember, like others here have said, the majority of people fail it the first time.
Its scary, you go to a new place, take a stressful written exam and then have to with a group of strangers go perform five skills out of 29 (our state). You never know who you're going to have as a client, or what the room will look like, where everything is ect. The fact everyone doesn't fail is a miracle.
I talked my way through every single step. That is the best idea ever, I agree with everyone! The girl who I tested with did this too. It just helped me focus. And I paused at the end, going over it in my mind, before I said "I've finished this procedure" and it was too late. Twice I realized I had made mistakes and I was able to correct them. You have a long time to do it, I didn't know anyone who ran out of time.
I understand the crying, and so will your friends understand. Once you tell one person the room will quickly swell around you and give you tons of support. YOU WILL GET THROUGH THIS AND PASS NEXT TIME! KEEP US POSTED!!!

I'm sorry you had a hard time A lot of my class didn't pass on the first try either. Also I feel for you because I'm about the same age and just back in school for the first time in years too. We'll get there!

I second what Turtle said about talking. It helped me in a couple ways. Talking helped me make sure I was doing the needed steps for something and it also got me over the fear I had of talking while I was working. We had to practice talking to the dummy, which felt so wierd to me. During the test, we were supposed to talk to the dummy. I find myself chatting away to residents now and still saying some of the same things. But on the test, it really helped.

THANKS SO MUCH everyone for the kind words! sorry it took so long to respond,we have been too busy to get on the computer. I will def. retest, sorry I sounded like such a baby,I was just devastated that I failed,I did everything great, until I forgot to wash the back I think what hurt as much as anything was the fact that the same "woman" passed several people through with major SAFETY violations,I know this because ,they came out of the room saying I forgot this that and the other and then they still PASSED! I was the patient when the girl completely made me in the occupied bed ,laying flat on my back and at one point she even shoved me AWAY from her, trying to pull the sheet under me,because she couldnt with me on my back, she never locked the bed brakes when transferring me to a wheelchair and she only locked ONE side of the wheelchair brakes.......SHE PASSED! how? the tester also gave these people hints, such as- are you sure you are done? did you forget anything? your not forgetting something, are ya? NEVER said a word to me.

anyway I'm old enough to know "life isnt always fair" but that still just hurts. I will go test again and hope and pray I make NO mistake! thanks again everyone for the comforting words. ya'll are great!
