I live in PA. When I first started at a large Geriatric Facility in 2004 the pay was $9.50/hour. I had to work 2 full time positions to pay my bills. Then I went to another facility. Full time with benefits paid $10.50/hour. I decided I couldn't live off of $10.50. I forfeited the benefits and guarenteed hours to work per diem and was paid $13 an hour and $14 for 3rd shift. I now work in a rehab faciltiy as a CNA/Medical Assistant and I make about $15.10/hour with the shift differential. Funny thing is, I am not responsible for nearly as many things as when I worked in an LTC. The job duties are a bit different, less stressful and so is the pay!!!

After a year there, I got an offer from a hospital for $15.50. Not too hard to figure out why that nursing home cannot keep good CNAs. I loved the experience and the residents, but I really disliked many of my coworkers.

I'm from MN too, do you care if I ask what hospital? I started out at Regina Medical Center LTC at 11.80 (a year and a half ago) I moved to Denver CO and make 13.00-14 hr. (Agency hospital work). Going to school too..I was at Inver Hills Community College and now I am at a CC in Denver.

I agree with you. There are several Supermarket and fast food chains in my area who start cashiers at a minimum of $11-$12 an hour. It isn't hard to figure out why Nursing Homes cannot keep good dedicated help. Why break your back lifting people for $8-$9 an hour when you can go down the street and flip burgers or ring up a register and make $12/hour?

It takes a special kind of person to be a CNA. One who has a big heart and one who knows how to budget on a small income..... (lol ) You definitely won't become rich being a CNA, however the rewards you will receive will not be in the form of a check!

I am in california and I started with no experience on med-surg at $11.00 a hour and shift diff was $1.50 for night shift. After one year I got 50 cents more and made 11.50 after shift diff was $13.00 a hour.

I am at a ltc facility in PA, and make $10.60 per hour; we also have a shift differential of $1 for evening, and $0.50 for night, and $1 for weekends. Not bad, but not great either.
