CNA in NC not accepted in TN

I had gone to school in NC, knowing that I would be moving to TN after school. I was assured that my license/certification would be good in both states. Now TN is saying that I can not work as a CNA here unless I go back to CNA school and completely re-take the course I just completed and tested on? Has anyone ever heard this, and is there someone that can give me information to get correct information, or a reason why?

Thank you,
Judy

I'm sorry to hear that you were given incorrect info the first time. Call these people back and see if they tell you the same thing. Check for info on the website. Ask a prospective employer. In the end, you might just have to follow the requirement to go through everything all over again. It doesn't make sense. But if that is the rule, you have to follow it. You might want to write to the certification authority and complain. You can mention that licensed nurses are allowed to endorse a license from another state, so you see no difference.

Hope that when you recheck, that you find out that you don't have to go through the extra trouble.

According to the information I have recieved I can be a CNA in NC, Fl GA, Ala, and Sc, but not TN, I have never heard of anything like this. I thought I might have to take a test or something, but not retake the whole class all over. They teach the same class I went to in NC, there is no differnece, not in course, price or requirements, that is what I don't understand, why make me pay and spend time doing something I just got done doing. I passed with a 98 average, it's not like I was even borderline on the test grades, I just don't get it.

I'm hoping that there is an agency that I can call for assistance. I have contacted the school in NC, and they continue to tell me I can work in TN, but TN keeps saying no. TN is in great need of CNA'S, so why make me do all this over agian?

It would appear that this is true. According to the TN Bureau of Health Licensure and Regulation Division of Health Care Facilities, As stated on their "PROCEDURES FOR PLACEMENT ON THE TENNESSEE NURSE AIDE REGISTRY".........

"If you are on the California, Colorado, Illinois or Missouri Nurse Aide Registry, complete Part I, attach a copy of your social security card and photo identification; return the entire application to the Tennessee Nurse Aid Registry at the address listed above. Individuals certified in Alabama, Georgia, and Illinois may be eligible tochallenge the Tennessee Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation (state test). Individuals certified in North Carolina must complete a Tennessee Nurse Aide Training Program and pass the Tennessee Competency Evaluation (train and test)."

See the following link helath.state.tn.us This may also be a helpful link for you it is more detailed and includes a list of training facilities in TN HCFTN

Their site states that people enrolled in an LPN/RN program may request to challenge the test. They do not give a reason why they do not accept NC cna training, but it may have to do with the length of time they require as oppose to NC. I wish you lots of luck with everything.

Sincerely,
Jay

Hello everyone this is the case also for us in VA I was told that I would have to retake the test again to practice nurse aide in NC! Dur to the fact that they have different standards for the CNA course.

I am a CNA and was wondering whether there is anybody here who works in Charleston, S.C. as a CNA. I would love to relocate there from Orangeburg, S.C. and I am looking for a place where there are nursing homes, hospitals and cheap rental apartments nearby. I would like to go to nursing school there too so any advice too on good community colleges, cheap apartments close to work places, will be appreciated.
