In the Chicago area, it's around $8 -$9 to start. Downstate Illinois, it's less. Some of the far western and eastern states are significantly higher, but their cost-of-living is much higher.

Someone may be able to answer if you give your city/state.

Also, as a generalization, assisted living pays the least, LTC next, hospital the highest, and home health towards the lower end (again, as a generalization).

By the way, the 'standard' response for desired rate of pay is "open". The LTC sets the rates according to their schedule, not yours.......
My Chicago experience has been different.Starting salaries in Chicago are between 10-15,LTC pays the most and the hospitals pay the least. My Home care agency pays from 11-18 for CNA's and the Hospice pays 16 too....The suburbs usually pay more and offer shift differentials like an extra 3 bucks on weekends and an extra 2 on Overnight shifts.

I started with no experience at 11.00 an hour in CA. I've been there over a year now and we just got a raise--not because of experience, but to better meet what other places are paying. 11.75 now, and with the annual review raise if I get the max amount I'll barely be above 12.00. Count your lucky stars you started at 12.50, though I've heard a well known hospital closer to LA starts their aids at $19-$21 an hour. Super hard to get in though.

In my area (New Orleans)

-Nursing Homes $6 to $9
-Hospitals $8 to $10
-Mental Wards $11 to $16
-Agency $11 to $15
-Home Health/ Hospice $10 to $15

Your mileage, as the above posters have put may vary as I
am deep in the south.

I live in Niagara Falls, NY...0 experience (newly certified ) but i just hired at the hospital near my house, the hospital has a nursing home within it, I'm starting at $10.71/hour with a .38 shift diff. Got benes and all that good stuff, I'm just kindal disappointed because in about 3 months after I get off probation I'm going to put in a bid to get transferred to the hospital side(doing float shift in er,medi/surgi, and icu) and I just found out the starting is one .01 higher..but the hospital side offers 100% tuiton assistance for FT cna's so that made me pretty happy!
