Clinicals start today!

by zooz

Well, I'll be leaving for my first day of clinicals at the nursing home in a couple of hours. I'm feeling this weird combination of scared to death and really excited and naively optimistic -- all at the same time.
Hopefully I won't say/do anything stupid and my brain will kick in so I'll remember how to, let's say, do a bedbath; because right now I'm drawing a complete blank on all my skills.
And I hope I get paired up with a nice CNA, someone who understands that I'm learning. Oooh, there's just so much to think and worry about!

Cross your fingers for me!

Good luck!! Just a warning that if you have a weird or bad experience in the nursing home that not all CNA jobs are like that. I found that my clinicals in the nursing home were ok, but in the hospital were really interesting. If I remember correctly, you said earlier that you won't get to goto the hospital during rotation. (BUMMER) But, I hope that you have a good experience and it will all come back to you when you get in there and start actually doing your skills with the patients. Remember to do it by the the book so you won't learn a sloppy or different way and you will be more likely to do your skills the right way for the state test.

Hey, Kim! I'm back! Time went by fast while I was there. I mainly watched, but I did get to assist my CNA with feeding, showers, and I did some BPs (a major area I need to work on).

I'm still trying to get used to the way everything is run there. (I've spent more time in hospitals than I have in nursing homes; too bad we don't get to do a rotation in the hospital.) I tried to stick to the way I was taught as much as possible, just like you said. I think I did most things correctly, but there were few times I honestly couldn't remember in what order the steps were and I had to rely on my CNA for guidance. (I'm definitely hitting my procedure manual tonight!)

I will admit, I was shocked at how many of the CNAs told me they never use gloves for toileting, diaper changes, showers/baths, etc. I understand they're crunched for time, but come on. And don't even get me started on transfer belt use and hand washing (or, more accurately the lack of).

So, besides all that, I had a very good day. It is hard, hard work, but I think it's very fulfilling. Just to get a thank you (I got four very heartfelt thank you's today, not that I'm keeping track. ) makes it worthwhile.

I think I'll go to sleep very tired, but very happy.

I just wanted to say "hi" and compliment you on your attitude. You sound like someone I would be quite happy to work with as a colleague. Keep it up and you'll do just fine.

I also love the quote in your signature. It's one of my personal favorites.

Good luck to you,
llg

Good luck with the rest of your clinical days! I start clinical on August 10th. We don't get to go to a hospital either, though. Oh well, I'm still excited.

P.S.- We have the same plan.... CNA to LPN to RN.

Aww... Thank you so much, llg!

That Edward Everett Hale quote is one of my all-time favorites. It is so elegant and puts into words exactly how I feel much better than I ever could. (I even have it framed and hanging on a wall in my house.)

Thanks, DreamyEyes!

It's too bad you won't be able to go to a hospital for clinicals. I know I was very disappointed when I found out that my class would only be going to a nursing home. (I wanted all the experience in as many different areas as I could get.) But, what can you do? Just keep a positive attitude. (I know you will. )

Oh, and "yay!" for the stepladder (CNA-LPN-RN) plan! It makes the most since to me, plus I like to take things one step at a time.

Good luck to you!
