Average Hrs a CNA works per Week!

by SerendipityWomYn Premium Member

On average, how many hours a week do you all work? If you wanted to work more hours are they available? Or do you hold down multiple jobs to make ends meet?

Currently I am working 32 hours (which is all I want to work, anything over 30 hours is considered full time at my facility).

It's generally pretty easy to find both full time and part time positions around here. In addition, there are a LOT of call-ins, so if you want more hours, you can tell the scheduler that you'd be interested in picking up extra. I've never had a problem.

I work 40 hours a week. The opportunity for overtime rarely presents itself (which is contrary to what I've heard about most nursing homes), but I've taken on extra hours a few times. 40 is enough to pay the bills though. If I had to work more than that on a regular basis I would probably start to go crazy.

We work on a two-week rotational schedule and right now I'm scheduled for 10 days every two weeks....but that doesn't mean much because the last few weeks we have been understaffed and I ended up working my days off. I have actually put in 7 days in a row a couple of times, got 1 or 2 days off, then back to work for 3 or 4 days.

Now we have two new CNA's and we are overstaffed, so some people will be going home (we are only allowed 7 CNA's on second shift). You have to come in, see who is there, and then they take volunteers to go home. Sometimes we will have 8 - 10 people scheduled to work.

Wow. With the highest CNA salary I've heard of being $15- $20Hr it seems that I would be struggling financially with any less than 50-60Hrs. a week. Providing that I were even able to attain that $15Hr job. Hopefully I can work nights to put the shift differential to my benefit.

$15-20/hr is NOT likely. $20/hour as an LPN is good. I'm in the NW burbs of Chicago, and CNAs here tend to start at 9.50-10.50/hr.

I make 9.50 and get 40 hours a week.

My facility offers a weekend option program where i work 6am-6 pm on saturday and sunday. So i work 24 hours, but get a shift incentive of $76 for working all weekend. So i only have to work 2 days a week. They also offer an "on-call" program where you pick 2 extra shifts a week to be on call and if someone calls in they call you. You can only refuse to come once a year, but for doing that you get a $2 pay raise.

I have also never heard of CNA's making $15 an hour. I live in a small town and they start you off at $7. I was offered a job at a BIG hospital and they were offering $12 to start.
Good luck!

For the record, if you are a CNA that works in a Hospital as a trained PCT $15Hr is very likely.

If I cant find a job that pays $12- $15Hr I am going to need the flexibility to work long hours per week. I would NEVER work for under $10 that is absolutely ABSURD! Not even for the experience. Abuse is NEVER acceptable.
