Am in my forth week of my training. I have started my clinical in a nursing a home. OMG! Me and my classmates be so mad that we actually wrote a complaint with director of nursing at our school. This is what happen we was in the day room about to feed the resident, a Cna came in the room and shoved food in a resident mouth and asked her why she wont eat, the resident Looked up at the nurse and said i told you i dint want that food, so the cna slam the spoon on her tray and said dont eat hope you starve do death. me and my classmates just look and was shocked that some can treat someone mother or grandmother like that. but that not all from what we seen so far the cna at this facility are so nasty to the resident.that i got into with one of he cna, i asked her how would she like for someone to treat her mother like that. she actually cursed me out, my instructor had to pull me out of the facility because i was to give her and old fashion beat down. My instructor just tell us that we are a guess in there facility.My question to you guys is how can you not get upset with the staff that work at the nursing home? oh and we go back on this tuesday coming!

This is obviously bad practice by the CNA and it should be addressed, but because you are a student that makes things tricky. You should first go to your instuctor and report the issue and tell her/him that you feel that an act like this should be brought to the attention of the head nurse or nurse manager. Also if you felt that you had to confront the CNA for her actions you should not do so in front of patients or coworkers. Pull her aside privately and tell her in a diplomatic way that you felt her actions were out of line and reportable. And as much as you would like to "beat her down" you can not let that show because it is unprofessional and will not get your point across. I hope that this CNA was counciled for her actions and if she gives you any attitude when she sees you for putting in a complaint you can either ignore her or say to her I am sorry that I had to report you, but I felt it had to be done to ensure safe and compassionate care to our patients. Which is what nursing is all about! Good luck!

It is abuse and it is wrong. I am not disputing or making excuses for what you and your classmates saw. But now that you have seen what "real world" is like you can learn from it, and the situation you were in. Most CNAs are there to make a difference in the residents life, and love those people like their own family. At least for me I do. Keep in mind that it is back breaking and hard work also very stressful. If you ever feel yourself getting to the end of your wits think back to what you saw that day and remember how you felt. Let your manager/ supervisor know that you had to walk away at that moment and go back when both yourself and the resident have calmed down.

I agree with the previous post. This is abuse and should be reported, but because you're a student it is difficult. Learn from her mistakes. I actually encountered a situation in the hospital I work in where another aide and I were changing a patient, and this aide said something to the patient that was inappropriate, unprofessional and uncalled for. I did speak to my nurse manager about her, and the aide was counceled. This job is very stressful, and everyone gets to the end of their wits end, but the trick is to learn when to back down and take a break. If I feel like I am going to blow, I (as dorky as it sounds) write down why I like my job. It really helps you to focus on why you are doing what your doing. Hope this helps!
