how do you feel about overtime

i work 3rd shift and last night i was asked to come in at 7:30 instead of 11:00. i really don't mind the overtime but what bothers me is we are told not to work overtime by the facility and that it must be approved. whenever they are short due to people calling in it seems it is always the same ones that are willing to come in and fill the slack. there are times we get letters from the mgmt that we must watch our hours. it is hard to refuse when i get a call because i know how it is to work shorthanded. it is unfair to the other workers and even more unfair to the residents. does anyone else have a problem with mgmt and working overtime?

I find it confusing that you are told not to work overtime, but then you are asked to work overtime. :confused: If they need you to come in to work overtime, then there shouldn't be a policy against it. Any overtime I work has to be approved, but we are not forbidden to work overtime. We would not be fully staffed if everyone only worked a 40-hour week. It sounds like there are two different forces at your workplace: management who doesn't want overtime, and the person who calls you in to work overtime. Only a supervisor, who should have the approval of management, calls someone in for overtime. Something seems odd with your overtime work policy.

where i work i guess basically it is a lack of communication. the other night i got a call by the rn on staff asking me to come in at 10 instead of 11 just so someone could leave an hour early. when i went in last night for the 4 hrs i told the asst. DON that someone had called in and she was ok with the fact i worked. the thing is the person in charge neglects to get approval sometimes. i guess the thing that bothers me most about the overtime issue is the fact that people just call off because they don't seem to want to work. i don't think they realize they are not working in a factory that we are taking care of people and must be responsible enough to come into work when we are scheduled. the place i work has enough people on staff but they get burned out because of people calling off.there isn't any incentive for people to come to work. no shift diriffiential, 25 cents an hour for weekend pay, and nothing extra for coming in when you are not scheduled.

Calling out of work is a big problem for CNAs. It happens where I work, and I've read a few threads here about this problem. Unfortunately, many workplaces don't offer any kind of differential or weekend pay for CNAs. I don't get a weekend or shift differential, and no one who works overtime gets any kind of bonus pay for coming in on their day off. I think this should change, and it would be used as an incentive. Many hospitals and nursing homes offer these kind of pay benefits, and more employers should follow suit.

see i have a similiar situation at my facility. they will have a signup sheet for overtime.. ok but in the meantime their sending home aides before half the shift is over? counting nursing hours. so while they are doing this. people call off and then they try to mandate? makes sense right? they dont do agency anymore for cna's. and there isnt suppose be madation at my work place with this new company that bought it. so instead if you dont offer to stay when they need someone then you are threatened with job abandonment[color=#568c1e]. nice right?? sorry went a bit off track there haha

They have the same problem in our hospital that Veronica27 described, and I stew over it everytime because it doesn't make sense. They call people off for the next shift and have to pay them $2.50 an hour anyways for calling them off, than they turn around and have to mandatory somebody for the next shift because call ins and when they mandatory they pay time and half for the first four hours and double time for the last four hours, per union contract. So sometimes we have aides that are making just as much $$$ per hour as a new nurse because they've been mandatoried double time plus shift diff... Better staffing organization would help conserve $$$$ for sure.

I do love when they mandate tho.. My shift ends at 11:30pm. If the floor gets a call at 11:15 you know automatically noone can leave the floor. They wait THAT LONG! without notice to try to get you to stay. If I wasnt there already for 5 years and if somewhere paid better or even matched them. I would be outta there!

Wow, do we all work for the same facility?????

There is to be NO overtime for staff unless approved at our facility. We are to be able to get our job finished in 8 hours. Tell this to the resident who decides to have a stroke or falls right before the end of the shift. In order to answer the call bells, finish the book work, finish our 3 get-ups in the am and assist with any transfers, we are to punch out on the dot.

HUMMMMMMM seems someone is trying to balance the budget instead of taking quality care of the residents. Pay someone overtime... I have been called in early the past 4 days. (Didn't go) Asked to work 2 of my days off (Didn't work). Have strep throat and called off last night sick.. I feel sorry for those I ask to work without me, but darngarsh it, we are only human.

Seems the management should, could, and will not hire more quality staff, treat them kinder with more understanding that we are ALL there for the quality care of our residents.

I am not a CNA to further my career. I am a CNA by CHOICE until I retire. I enjoy my residents, most of my co-workers, and the grace that I am able to work. Get on with your lives, and pat each other on the back, because most Management will not.
