First day clinicals :(

Today was my first of two clinical days. I'm disappointed because I thought I would be doing much better.

I worked with another student when giving a shower. I was scared that I would hurt the resident when washing them and I didn't really know how to clean the private parts. I mean, I know how to clean them but I was very embarassed to touch them I guess :uhoh21:.......

I hope this is all normal in the beginning? That was probably my biggest problem besides feeling lost.

I feel like I didn't do enough and I hope that it will be better tomorrow.....

How were your first days of clinicals?

Absolutely normal. First, you are doing something you have never done before and, second, by doing pericare, you are doing something that we - in society - don't usually do, something very intimate. Put the two together and of course you may feel uncomfortable.

Just concentrate on helping the patient relax and, often, you end up relaxing yourself by extension.

Hang in there. The more you do it, the more you will become comfortable with it. Also realize that even tho it may be a bit embarassing at first, you are getting someone clean and dry and making them feel so much better not only physically but mentally too. I remember being embarassed the first time I did pericare on a male. That feeling goes away with time and experience. Keep at it and good luck!

Today was my sencond day and sadly the last. I loved it and I felt already so much different. Now I can't wait to pass my state exam next week and to get a job.

It's hard at first, then in no time, you'll be doing what you need to do with expertise and you'll know what to do. It's also easier when you know the resident. Good luck!

Don't worry. What you are feeling is very normal. I felt the same way my first few days of clinicals. As time goes on, you will get more comfortable with your skills and you will gain more confidence. Just give it time.

I know those first few days can be intimidating for anyone.

How many days of clinical do you have?

It is completly normal to feel embarrassed when first doing peri-care, esp on a male. You will 'get over it' the more you do it. I'm sure you're doing just fine.
