Fired for posting on face book

They just fired a girl for bashing the company's name on face book. Risking my life to go to a underpaid job at CH is not worth it is not really bashing the company. It was a negative comment but she never said they were a bad company just that she was under paid and not worth taking a chance with her life to drive in the snow. What are your thoughts about this?

I pray that people with poor attitudes and limited skills in the areas of grammar, spelling and syntax don't get into nursing. But that's just me.

Amen.

If you're going to bad mouth your company...do it verbally...to your loved one. To your pillow. Or maybe just take a run and get that negative energy off you!

Considering the economy these days, it is making businesses of all sorts be vigilant about their employees. A few choice words is not worth losing your job.

If you really don't like your job, go hunt for another, then kindly give the previous job your two weeks.

I am sure they have ways of hacking into peoples social media pages. At my job we had to sign saying that if we post any negative media about the company we could be suspended or even fired. I guess they have a reputation to keep and you can't express your feelings on your own personal social media. It's a shame you literally have no privacy.

Of course you have privacy...just not on the internet.

Think about it. A simple search on Google can pull up information from social network sites. Your opinion posted on Facebook, Twitter, etc. can reach thousands of people depending on who you're friends with and who's searching for you. Years ago, you'd have to publish a newspaper article or something of that sort to get your opinion that far out.

And while your employer can't prevent people from espousing their opinions, they sure can help who they employ. And that's every bit their right.

You do realize that no one is forcing you to post your thoughts on a public site like FB? You also realize that anyone can read that? (And don't be fooled by the "privacy" filters...) When you post it on a public forum it is there for anyone to see. You do not have and your should expect not to have any privacy.

If this person worked in an outpatient department- as MA's do- if the weather was that bad, it was likely that most of the patients either called in at the last minute to say they weren't coming in, or noshowed. A few clinics close here when the weather is brutal. If you're not an urgent care, why not close? Or keep a few people on, for the few people who do show up?

I guess my point is, we say it's ok if patients don't come in bad weather, but have a double standard for staff.

FYI: a good friend of mine, whom I trust, told be that her boss pays a fee to FB and has access to look up potential hirees pages. She can even view deleted things. She works for a 150 bed combo LTC/SNF in a small town.

I met a lady who works for kaiser and she told me she deleted her FB when her boss, in HR, told her that before she decides to interview someone, she looks at their FB.

I like FB, but I put very little personal stuff on it. It's hard, even with privacy settings, to be for sure people can't see what you posted. We need to all be mindful!!

All of this is why I don't post anything on Facebook about my job. I don't even list where I work. Any reference to work is so vague or completely objective that no one could look at it either in private fashion or public fashion and draw any sort of negative conclusion. I am friends with people from work but I don't say how I know them. When it comes to the internet, you have to keep it as vague and open-ended as possible in order to cover your backside. Even screen names can reveal more than you expect them to reveal. If someone knows you well enough, they can find you behind even the most elusive screen name. And the poor choices of what to post don't necessarily fall under the category of young people making stupid choices. I have read posts by adults who are older than me that made me cringe.

Are you for real? Now that I have my laughter under control and have wiped the hot chocolate off my computer screen, I'll point out that "your own personal social media" is on the internet. Which means it isn't your own, it's not personal and you should have literally no expectation of privacy.

Is it not a common sense thing to keep negative comments about your workplace OFF a social media website? For example, I can understand an "I'm tired" post about a hectic day at work, but not bashing the workplace for being understaffed, difficult residents, non helpful coworkers, etc. in that post, even if they caused you to be tired.

Basically, assume that if you post it somewhere on the internet, your boss or coworkers will be able to read it. Is being paranoid helpful? If you want to keep your job, certainly! I bet my workplace took a look at my facebook page before I was hired, and probably got terribly bored in the process.

Sounds about right. You can't even post positive comments about my employer on FB and they don't even like you posting where you work, although they allow it. That was silly for her to say anyway.... in healthcare, you can't call in just because it snows. Those people still need help when the weather is bad. If you don't like working on snow days, holidays, weekends, and nights, get a business degree lol.
