chemistry

hello, i aam doing my exams at the moment, i need to know why nurses and midwives need to understand basic biochemistry effects within the body... please help

These type of courses are needed to understand the chemical changes that occur when a patient is ill. For example, if a patient has kidney failure, it is important to understand the lab values of the BUN and Creatinine as related to the damage to the kidney -- it is pre-renal, intra-renal or post-renal causes? If you understand the micro including the chemistry ...your will understand the changes going on in the patient's body and the symptoms you see.

Aren't you guys allowed to prescribe drugs? You can't understand basic pharmacology unless you understand chemistry. Conditions which affect body pH and temperature affect the disposition of drugs. Quaternary amines can cross the blood-brain barrier and cause mood and behavorial changes.Protein binding, lipid solubility- gotta know the properties of the drugs you're prescribing - or at least to know the terms when you're checking the PDR.

I liked BioChem the best. I thought it was easy. A lot of review from Nutrition and Microbiology
