In many states CNS = APN. IL and MO are two that come to mind.

APRN consensus model is CNS=APRN. Some states are lagging behind but this is the goal. The goal is also prescriptive authority for all APRNs in all states.

Hello everyone!

First time to post here and glad to find this thread for CNS student. I am on my first semester and slowly learning more about the scope of practice of the CNS. I am actually at a fence on being CNS. I am thinking of transferring to FNP, mainly because it is more in demand than the CNS.

For those who have CNS experience or those that have been in contact with many CNS, what really are the job opportunities out there? Some of my colleagues have asked me about my course and a few of my previous supervisors are not even aware of CNS. Makes me think if I am making the right decision. I know that ultimately it is not about which job is in the demand, but it is an important factor to consider. Have you guys gone into this phase as CNS students?

Also, if there are any CNS reading this, when you work in your facility or hospital, do you experience plenty of politics in your position such as when you initiate programs for your unit? Its a thought that crossed my mind because I hate "politics" in organizations and I'm not the "political" type of person.

Thank you in advance for your inputs!

Being on the fence- I would say if your primary goal is to provide direct care to patients and to prescribe medicine than go with the FNP.

Job opportunities- I think since the CNS is broad you can look at many jobs that are not CNS specific like professional development, quality improvement, or managerial. However there are plenty of CNS advertised jobs throughout the US. You just have to be willing to relocate. The role is broad and is very difficult to articulate. I need to practice my articulation of the role because when people ask me this I always stumble on my words. I know there are alot of healthcare workers not aware of the CNS role. Yes it is scary and I find the closing of CNS programs even more discouraging. Healthcare is in a major transition. Now more than ever healthcare is demanding quality outcomes and this is a time of necessity for CNSs. This is an opportunity for CNSs to utilize their skills. Unfortunately the CNS jobs are found only in the healthcare organizations who use them. They are not a necessity. However I found at the organization where I complete my clinicals at, that this organization is very supportive of their CNSs. There are many of them throughout the different hospitals. I have also noticed that this organization has a passion for quality of patient care and this has renewed my faith in hospital administration.

Politics- I am a student. However I feel if you are in a leadership role in an organization there is no way to avoid politics.

Goodluck with your studies. I know I responded late to your post. Are you still in the CNS program or did you switch to the FNP?
