Specialties CNS

Hi Everyone. Looking to create a Thread for current CNS.

Specializes in NICU, ICU, PICU, Academia.

Timely post - I recently completed an MSN - Education Specialist through , and really fell in love with research. (I know - strange)

I work in a PICU, and would really like to explore a CNS in either peds or critical care.

Thoughts? Programs you could recommend? I need a distance learning program - although 1-2 trips to campus/ year would be doable.

Thanks for your input.

Specializes in CNS, PMHNP, EMS, ER, Instructor.

Searching at Clinical Nurse Specialist Programs | Find Accredited CNS Degrees showed several Pediatric CNS programs, including Post-Masters Programs.

I know when I was searching for online programs it was critical to make sure that the Post-Masters programs you look at recognize the MS in Nursing Education - some programs allow only students with a APN MS to enroll in their Post-Masters programs.

Marycarney, what about getting a PhD? If you love research, that would be an option to consider. UW-Milwaukee offers an online MSN to PhD program. UWM College of Nursing Doctor of Philosophy - Online

I don't know much about this option but overall I've been pleased with anything UWM-related.

I am starting a CNS program next week. I am wondering what all of you want to do as a CNS when you are done with school? What are your career goals?

What do I want to do "when I grow up?"

Run a diabetes program! A vibrant, exciting program for people with T2DM and high risk for T2DM. Mentor students and younger staff, maybe teach in a more formal academic setting someday.

Im heading into my last semester of clinicals and always thought I'd do staff development but I fell in love with palliative care last semesters rotation. So now I'm torn between the two. Whatever opportunity opens first I guess.

Hello everyone, I am not currently a CNS student, but I have researched programs and will hopefully be applying this fall. I was quite surprised to find that there are very few programs in the country, fewer still that are online and even fewer that are related to my specialty: NICU! (Special shout-out to NICU_babyRN!! :loveya: ) I will be taking classes with NNP students and Peds CNS students so I expect to mostly be on my own. Glad to know you all are here and facing similar situations! Good luck to everyone this semester!

Hi NICU_babyRN, where are you going to school? Will you be taking a cert exam specific to NICU? Good luck with you capstone project?

Specializes in TELE, Step Down.

I go to the University of South Alabama. No thesis done....I'm not sure if the program is thesis or capstone but maybe I will find out this upcoming semester? I am taking health assessment and nursing research. I have managed to go through the my first two semesters (Fall 2011, Spring 2012) without complaining. But I have to say this summer semester is difficult. I am so glad that I have only one summer semester of this. Seriously I keep thinking it is just two months! But feel like it has been longer!! So in the Fall, I start my CNS class and practicum.:yelclap: I am so excited! The time has flown by in school....with the exception of this past month of summer semester...LOL!

Hi Tyloo. How did your summer class go? I "met" 2 women on the STTI Facebook page that did their CNS/MSN at ur school and are now in the DNP program there as well. USA is very popular :-)
