Hi, I'm currently an ICU nurse gathering enough time and experience to apply to school. I like change in life so I'm just wondering what other options a CRNA might have down the line if they tire of providing anesthesia. I can imagine teaching would be an option, but what else? It seems to me it would be the one downside of an nurse anesthetist's career compared to the many options that an RN might have. Thanks in advance!

I've never heard of one that did, but I imagine you could do anything you want or interests you. Research, education, volunteer at Operation Smile, Doctors without Borders, etc. Maybe retire!!!!

I do not know of too many CRNAs who have the problem of burn out. But if it happens to you....teach, become an administrator or chief CRNA. Also, of course there are many, many options for CRNAs in type of practice...from OR to private practice, office anesthesia, day surgical anesthesia, specializations in pediatric, cardiac, neuro, ob etc...

I have never heard of a CRNA getting tired of providing anesthesia. It is like someone saying they are tired of sex...People just don't say those things. There are too many opportunities available. Skipaway mentioned some various practice settings, however you also have your pick of peripheral blocks, neuraxial, or general anesthetic techniques. Not to mention the big tubes you get to stick in necks and groins. It is too much fun to simply get burnt out.
That's good to know - thanks for the replies!
