Upcoming interview at Duke

  1. Hi Everyone! I've recently joined the discussion after following it for some time now. With a 10 year dream of wanting to become a CRNA, I'm now a RN in a CICU with approximately one years experience. I started applying to Anesthesia programs and just found out that I have my first interview at Duke University in August!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm beyond excited Has anyone interviewed there before and have any helpful hints? Also, is anyone a student there now or has been recently? I've done hours of research on programs, and it sounds exceptional, but it's always nice to hear firsthand. Thanks so much!

Good luck to you in August! I'm not a SRNA yet, in fact I just graduated and am awaiting my board results. Congrats on the interview!

    Nosyla,

I interviewed at Duke last year and met all of the requirements except for the 1 year exp. I missed that one by three days! But they couldn't risk accreditation I guess. The interview was fairly painless. I only had to show up for a 30 minute time slot vs. the all day interview process that some schools do. The only clinical type question that I got in my interview was that I was asked to explain one of my most difficult pts. Other than that, they asked the typical interview questions such as "why do you want to go to CRNA school..." and "what have you done to prepare for school..."(here they want to know that you have financially planned for it and that you have applied to other schools.) Everyone at Duke is really helpful and they have a good program (but new) and they have one of the best mock OR labs I have ever seen.
I have just interviewed at USC in Columbia and am waiting the dreaded 3 weeks to find out if I have been accepted.
Please let me know how the interview goes.
    Good Luck!

A full day beginning with a 3 hour introduction to the program. Then they have a 4 hour block of time for individual interviews. These last about 20-25 minutes each. There was a panel of 6 people including 2 SRNAs, the director of the program, and a few practicing CRNAs. They asked questions based mainly on the personal interest section of my resume. The day ended with a really nice 2 hour reception with the current students in the program. I found this to be extremely helpful in gaining perspective and true insight into the program. I am even more sold on their program after the interview.
I am eagerly anticipating their decision...
    Mike

I am not a CRNA, but it is my goal. I recently passed the boards and received my license in the mail a few weeks ago. I will start working in the ICU in September. I currently work as an RN for a Cosmetic Surgery Center, this is very exciting! I have observed the CRNA that works for us and that is when I discovered something that I knew I would enjoy. My goal was to become a surgeon because the body fascinates me, and I love surgery. I know I would love the hands on part of it. (Invasive!!!) But when I observed the CRNA and knew I would enjoy it too. So I have decided to apply for CRNA school in a year or two after my ICU experience and then decide from there if I want to go further.
I wish you the best of luck with your interview in August at Duke! I know how excited you must be! I plan to go to UMBC in Maryland. They just started a new program here. Good Luck and let us all know how it goes in August!

Just returned from an interview there. It was very pleasant and laid back. They gave a very informative presentation at the beginning of the day, followed by assigned interview time slots. We were each interviewed by a panel of approximately 8 people, ranging from the program director, CRNA's and SRNA's. It was a decent experience for me. I was impressed by the school and the program. I am nervously awaiting to see if I get admitted for Jan. 05.

Hey are-in ! I was there on the second day. I think I did OK ??? USC is my first choice of schools at this point considering all the factors in my life. I also have an interview coming up at Barry University. I'm scheduling it after I hear from USC. Also, I was on the first in-coming class interviews for Midwestern University in Phoenix, AZ and got accepted, but I reluctantly turned it down - I couldn't get my life in order in the three months time between interviews and beginning of class. (They were quite pricey). Best of luck to you !!!

Hey I was wondering how much ICU experience, what your undergrad GPA, GRE, and certifications were. I am just curious to see how I stack up.

I personally am looking at applying to Duke and USC at Columbia too. Forgive my curiosity, just really excited to finally get where you guys are now.

    Sincerely,
    Bryant (preCRNA)
