Katrina's Effect on CRNA programs in LA

by Roc_On

My prayers go out to all those who lost homes, possessions, and loved ones. How did the hurricane affect CRNA programs? I understand that the Tulane anesthesia residents will be moving to UT Houston for residency. Will any CRNA students move as well?

I am in my first year at the Uniformed University in Md. I came from the ICU at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS. and am supposed to be going back in May to start clinicals. We have several students that are currently there for clinicals. As of right now, we don't know where people are going to be going for clinicals. The program directors are working pretty hard to figure things out.

I was wondering about that as well. As if us anesthesia students don't have enough to stress about, your home gets destroyed, and you're forced to relocate your family during school. My prayers goes out to all the students on the gulf coast!!!

They are moving the LSU medical students to Pennington Biomedical here in Baton Rouge, but they didn't mention the CRNA students. I would hope they would get equal treatment. I'll ask around when we start school back up on Tues., if I'm able to get a tank of gas and then get to school.

I just started the program this August(Class size 48). The school is across the street from the Superdome and the first floor had several feet of water. The area will not be accessible for months but the school has relocated administration in Baton Rouge and has requested we all register with our location(www.lsuhsc.edu if anyone is interested). We are awaiting word of when and where classes will begin and although we don't have clinicals this semester I suspect we will utilize many of the approved clinical sites throughout LA, MS, and TN.
Unfortunately many of my classmates have lost homes and are in TX,AL and TN currently. Housing is a big issue as Baton Rouge has doubled in population practically overnight so the market is very tight. My home is 30 miles West of New Orleans and we had very little damage(Thank the good Lord).

I just want everyone to know that the people of New Orleans are great of spirit and I know they want to come home as soon as possible. I have opened our home up to several families who cannot get back into the city to see if their homes are even there. Also realize that sometimes the media puts a horrible spin on what is happening there to promote their political agendas and sometimes you have to take the reports with a grain of sand. I was terribly disappointed by the trash I saw on FOX, especially reports by Shep Smith and Geraldo Rivera.

Thanks so much for the concern.

Default geraldo
Geraldo Rivera should be taken off the air. That guy is such a whack job. he couldn't report the truth even if he wanted to.

I am from NO as well, but have lived in TN for some years. I hope that anyone in need will feel free to contact me here by email. I am at MTSA as a junior student and there are a few with family impacted as well as my own family.

I feel that the city will rebuild. I am equally disgusted with the media coverage. I am so angry with the one sidedness.

Pray for those in need. There are a lot of people in need now.

Default LSU's program?
I just started @ LSU's CRNA program this August as well, and am waiting on pins and needles for word from Administration as to the fate of our program during this time of turmoil. I have to believe that if the Medical and Dental students' programs will be continuing within the next 3 weeks, that the CRNA students will be given the same opportunity, although I'm sure the task of coordinating classes and clinical sites must be overwhelming at best for those in charge. I live about 50 miles west of New Orleans and our community only sustained minimal damage. I received an Email Saturday from one of our fellow classmates who was finally evacuated from Charity Hospital after a week! She referred to it as a "hell hole". I can't even imagine what they must have gone through there. RiverParish, hope our class meets up again very soon, in Baton Rouge, and INTACT!

As I just started in my program and have been studying a lot I have not been watching a whole lot of TV coverage of the whole thing. Being from LA, I have been trying to keep up a little. I did see a few Geraldo and Shepard smith broadcasts and I am wondering how they made it one sided? To me they seemed stressed out and in a panic. Just wondering? I am confused as to what folks are talking about.
Thanks for the Clarification
