There is no way you can become a nurse anesthetist 100% online...there is a large portion of didactic work.

The lecture could be online I suppose...but there isnt any way to get around the clinical work.

Maybe it's for current CRNAs who want to get their DNP.

I wish people would do the research before posting things like this. The online DNP program is for those who have already completed a master's degree the traditional route and are practicing CRNAs. It is program designed to enhance the leadership role of the CRNA and possible prepare them for academia. See this direct quote from the ad (University of New England

University of New England's (UNE) online Doctor of Nursing Practice Nurse in Anesthesia (DNP) prepares Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) for clinical leadership positions in a dynamic and diverse health care system. CRNAs who desire to grow professionally as leaders, clinical practitioners, and educators will find this post-master's online DNP a convenient and stimulating educational opportunity.

Here is a link to the actual didactic and clinically based master's degree for the entry level CRNA student, which is definitely not online: University of New England - Nurse Anesthesia

The MSNA curriculum is designed so that students are based on UNE's Portland campus for the first eight months (two semesters) of the program. The majority of the basic science didactic courses are offered during this period. The remaining 19 months of the program are hospital-based, with an emphasis on advanced coursework, clinical training, human patient simulator lab experiences, and completion of a capstone project. All students are required to complete the entire curriculum with passing grades.

As someone who is interested in pursuing the DNP someday, misrepresenting the degree and the training is definitely no going to help mass appeal. Please do the leg work before misrepresenting this concept to the masses. Thanks!

Since no one here had heard of this online dnp program, I went ahead and emailed the assistant director of program. This is the response I got:

Yes our on-line DNP program is in the marketing stages. We are in the final stages of approvals. We expect to launch our DNP program in January 2011.

As for the pain management aspect: the DNP will offer two tracks of study to chose from. Patient safety and Pain management.

The initial offerings for pain will be within the DNP program. The Certificate in pain management will be offered at a later point in time for CRNAs who do not qualify or who do not want to engage in the DNP program.

The test page went up last week. we are working with our consultants to link it to the UNE website. If you are interested. Please go back to the link and submit your information and you will be sent information.

So there it is. It does seem that they should have established the links on the website before starting to advertise...I'm just saying.

As previously stated...these DNP programs are for currently practicing Advanced Practice Nurses, or people who already possess an MSN. My old school (UNR) just started a DNP program as well. 5 semesters i believe, online.
