Clinical Exposure in School

Specialties CRNA

Hi,

What is the normal clinical exposure while in grad school for non-routine cases. Do you get a fair amount of exposure to some fairly complicated cases, or does it just depend on where you go to school. Thanks.

:D :D :D :D

not that i have done any yet but clinicals start in dec for us. Kaiser has one of the best clinical experiences you can get...and believe me i researched alot of them

The minimum requirement for graduation is 30 emergency cases.

Of course, an emergency case is defined as one in which the patient is not prepared for surgery, so can be relatively simple or very complex.

You have to do the research for each school that interests you to get the answer to this one.

Some schools have high-acuity rotations where you are literally standing in the corner in "observation-mode", MDAs that stand over you during induction and emergence, restricted regional practice, etc.

Other schools have SRNAs actively participating in the management of trauma, complex neuro, placing PAs, Alines, epidurals.

Remember that nurse anesthetist practice is primarily a clinical one. Even educators. researchers and administrators must have a strong clinical background to become a CRNA.

If I were starting again, I would look for a school that has a strong clinical program with a lot of opportunity to do a variety of cases, including the boring, slow ones. Get as much experience as you can while in school, you and your future patients will appreciate it.

After over 40 years of practice, I am constantly amazed at how each patient responds differently to anesthesia. That is what makes it interesting and fun.

sorry, i should have read your question more closely. at kaiser your expected to graduate with between 900 and 1200 cases, depending on how hard to apply yourself in clinical, 2 months at a large childrens hosp, trauma at county hosp, regional at naval hosp in san diego, all during your senior year. it appears it will be an intevsive clinical experience all around. oh and emphasis placed on neuro, ob, chest cases also.
