Advice!

    Hi everyone!

I'm just looking for some advice. I'm currently a nursing student and I am definately interested in becoming a nurse anesthetist. For anyone out there who is a CRNA, would you recommend this career for someone who is currently interested in it? I also would like to know how crazy hard it was for you to get into a nurse anesthetist program. I would just like to know more about it. Yes, I do know that I should shadow someone. If you guys can add anything else that's helpful, you're more than welcome to.

Why do want to become CRNA when you haven't even finished undergraduate school yet? You can find posts on AN from people who made it through CRNA school and didn't like the job. Do you know you are in intensivist? How could you know that...you haven't even started working yet. Get an ICU job and stick with it for a few years - make sure that your considerable financial and personal investment will be worth it.

I said I was interested, I didn't say I was definitely going down that road. If you're going to have an attitude then don't respond. Thanks.

Nurse anesthetists rank at the top in job satisfaction rates for all types of nurses. There are numerous threads on here talking about getting into nurse anesthesia school (each individual experience is going to be different). The difficulty getting into school will vary by region of the country in which someone applies, the academic year, and most importantly your stats.

FYI: These are open threads and just because you started the thread does not mean you have control of the thread in anyway. People can and will post stuff you occasionally do not like. My best advice is just go with the flow, and/or ignore the comment.

Getting into school not that bad, getting through school will be a different story There are def some hoops to jump through as far as applying to school...gre, ccrn, specific pre reqs, letters of req, icu experience, ect. I didn't think it was to bad getting accepted to school. Would i recommend this career path: I think so, I am just starting out so I can't speak to much on the career yet...but I haven't met many unhappy crna's! I like it for the autonomy, responsibility, and just a better life style for the fam and I. hope that helps a tid bit.

I love being a CRNA and know that the best decision I made in my life was entering this profession. Read all of the posts here and on other websites. If you do a google search you will find many websites and discussion groups that are very active regarding the profession. Also, FaceBook has several CRNA groups. Unfortunately, I am not in a position that permits shadowing, but I highly recommend that you find someone who will help you. Don't be taken back by snarky comments--in fact, get used to it--it comes with the nursing profession.

One final point, while you are still in undergrad, if you are interested in any advance practice education, especially anesthesia, take as many hard science classes as you can. They are much more important on your transcript than nursing theory type course.

    wtbcrna,

Hi, I noticed you had information in AF nursing on a previous post but it was an old post so I figured I would try and contact you here. My question is concerning CRNA school and the AF. I have recently commissioned into the AFR as a FN. I have not attended COT, SERE, FN school, etc...as of yet. My question is this. An opportunity has come up where I may be able to attend CRNA school this upcoming fall, but as you can probably see my dillemma is that I have yet to complete all of my training and doubt that it will all be done by the time classes would begin. Is there anyway around this? Or any options or advice you could give me? I would really appreciate any advice! Thank you!

You need to talk with your Chief Nurse and commander ASAP and see if there is anything that you can do about this.
