Looking for a CNM to shadow!

Hi my name is LaTasha and I live in Sterling Height, MI. I am currently finishing my BSN at Davenport University (Aug 2014). I am in the process of applying to a CNM program and would like to find a certified nurse midwife to mentor me. I have always had a passion for women's care and it would be my absolute dream to graduate from a CNM program and work as a midwife. I am currently working as an RN Care Manager for community based agency and soon will start an RN Care Manager position in hospice. I am a fairly new nurse having graduated in May 2012, with only about 4 months of clinical experience on a medical surgical floor. Life threw a few curve balls my way but I never lost focus of what I want to do. If there are any midwives in my area that would like to take an energetic bubbly passionate nurse who generally smiles too much, I am that person!

Might I suggest getting involved with some local organizations. It is very difficult to cold call a CNM these days as they are very busy with demands of precepting students in programs and seeing patients. But don't be deterred, I was a member of Doulas Care, a volunteer doula program in Ann Arbor, MI and this is where my networking and mingling with the birth community began. Also a little closer to you would be St. John Mother Nurture Project- they do fabulous work promoting health education among mothers and breastfeeding. I think once you start mingling in the circles, you will have no problem finding a midwife to mentor you and that you jive well with. By the way, have you considered becoming a doula. The volunteer program is either low cost or no cost and you can volunteer which helps get your midwifery feet wet by attending births. doulascare.org
