Any LM becoming CNM?

If so, why? My ultimate goal is to become a midwife with a homebirth practice as well as a birth center. I've spoken to both LM's & CNM's and their veiws are very different. LM's say that we don't need any more nurses and becoming a nurse will medicalize birth. CNM's don't seem to have much confidence in LM's. I'm confused as to where to go. I gave birth with a LM and the experience has led me to become a midwife but I'm not sure how to get there. I know that I do not want to work in a hospital but being that 99% of women birth in a hospital leads me to believe that I may have to do that. Being an LM you can't work in a hospital. I don't know what to do. Any words of wisdom out there??
There's a midwifery school near me but they're not MEAC accredited and it seems to be a little iffy. But they completely submerge you into midwifery. I just don't know.
