Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNM)

The Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) is an advanced practice RN (APN) who is a graduate of a nurse-midwifery program and is nationally certified. Most states require an MSN to be a licensed CNM. Per the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) position statement, Mandatory Degree Requirements for Entry into Midwifery Practice, approved by the ACNM Board of Directors in March 2006, a graduate degree will be required for entry into practice by 2010. The CNM delivers babies in hospitals and homes, provides prenatal and postpartum care for mothers, post-delivery care for newborns, family planning and birth control counseling, and preventive health screening. In most states, CNMs have prescription privileges.
