I wish more people would see how the pay is not the "35.00/hr" that the news broadcasts when speaking of our current shortage and grads going to the US. Also, unless you are living on a boarder town the exchange is relative. When you live in the US you spend in US, dollar for dollar.
Yes the pay here in Canada is not that bad when you look at it that way. The taxes suck, but I'd rather make 24.00/hr and pay taxes than make 14.00/hr period...that's a slap in the face.
Are these quotes of 13 and 14.00 an hour for RN or LPN??? Sounds extremely low. I live in Mississippi, one of the lowest paying states in the country and the average I've heard for a new grad RN is around 18-19.00. The lowest I've ever heard is 16.50 an hour and I was shocked by that! Something is definitely wrong here. I didn't spend what will we about 45000.00 for an undergrad degree just to make 14.00 an hour...and if that means having to move, so be it! One thing that makes it more difficult too, is that you have people accepting starting wages without being educated on what is considered a normal range of pay for the field they are in. That makes it hard for the next person who comes in after them wanting a decent wage. A person in a clerical position can make 13 or 14 bucks in my area with NO college training...

I was curious about that too and then I saw the dates of the posts at the beginning were from 1999. Is that what RNs made in 1999?

1999? Oh good! Hopefully that makes a difference....although that wasn't THAT long ago! I don't know....someone did tell me they came out making 16.50 and that was THIS year!

They pay an extra $0.50 for ACLS certification. Shift diff for 3-11 is 8% and 11-7 is 16%. No extra for weekends...yet
Jenadox--your's was the first post that mentioned a pay differential for certification. In our facility (Calif) we have a pay differential for any national certification (i.e. CCRN, RN-C) and a second differential for a Bachelor's degree (BSN, BSHS). No diff for ACLS or MICN or MSN. This way any nurse can get the pay differential: critical care, OR, med/surg, etc. We've always believed that ALL nurses work hard--our jobs are just different.

I am a nursing student, but work at Meadville Medical Center. The starting pay for RNs at MMC is $17.80/hr. plus shift and weekend differential. Thought you might be interested to know that

I plan to come down and interview, etc. sometime in May after graduation. I thank you for your time and hope to hear from you (or anyone who has any insight into job availability in South Carolina).
