How do I get started in Case Management?

by jmayne

I have my BSN and am really interested in getting into Case Management. I need advice as to the best way to go about it and what additional courses or education do I need?

Although I am an ADN working towards my BSN, most starting positions in case management want a BSN and at least 3 to 5 years clinical experience. If you can not find a case management position now, look for other positions that work with case management, such as quality, core measures, auditor, or some hospitals still use separate discharge planners and utilization reviewers. Some posts in other forums also suggest trying case management for an insurance company first. Although the information is probably good, I would not waste my time with an expensive case management course, since you still have to have the 1 to 2 years case management experience to sit for the CCM exam. (Plus, I passed it by relying on what I learned working case management & studying).

ARnurse69... where do you sit for the case management exam? Is there some kind of professional accreditation/organization? Does a MSN help at all? I'm going for my BSN-RN and think case management might be for me. Thanks!

Getting your CCM would be helpful. Certified Case Manager.Look up ccmc on line. Also the Case Management Society of America has many chapters and probably one on a city nrea you. It's a good place to network with casemanagers and find out about open positions and qualifications. I have worked as a Case Manager for about 15 years and I see nurses hired directly from clinical positions all of the time.
