From reading a lot of the q+a on here it seems like many new case managers are simply thrown into the "deep end" with little to no training from their organizations when they start. This semester I have the opportunity to do an internship (approx 10 hrs/week) with an RN case manager. I have 3 yrs acute care nursing experience and 5+ years home health experience with pediatric patients.
If you were in my Danskos, what sorts of experiences would you try to have this semester to get a good feel for the best (and worst) parts of the case manager's job? What are the essential experiences (ie. the stuff I can expect to do nearly every day/week in this position)? Also, besides chocolates and baked goods, is there anything in particular I could offer to do for my preceptor (such as work related duties like data entry or office stuff) you could suggest that are particularly helpful because they take away from the CM's more important duties of relationship building and planning? I'd like to offer to do some things like that in order to offset the time my education/training are taking away from her workday.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
