Case management interview-please tell me about case management!

Hello to everyone here! First time poster...I finally stumbled upon this site and would love some answers prior to my interview. First, some background info: I graduated with my BSN in 1997 and have ~6 years of experience as an OB/GYN staff nurse (mostly labor and delivery). In July 2003, I woke up unable to get out of bed. I've been dealing with spine/muscle/pain issues since without a definitive diagnosis-at first, it was a bulging disc (which I still have) but after PT, accupuncture, meds, consults, I continued to have right-sided pain from my low back through my buttock, thigh, calf, and toes with numbness, tingling, and weakness. Now it's up in my shoulder and ribs and I'm being evaluated for fibromyalgia.

Anyway, despite all my problems, I have been denied LTD through my private insurance due to my inability to be diagnosed and am awaiting (albeit without much confidence) for my Social Security disability hearing...the long and short of it is-I need some income. I want my old life back. So I've applied for a case management position at a local teaching hospital and received a call back for a interview this past Friday. It's a 8-5 position (M-F) on the oncology floor. I'd like to know as much as possible about what the job entails before I go on this job interview.

I'd like to know from those of you "in the trenches" what is involved in your day-to-day jobs especially anything to do with the physicality of your job. Any detail you can give me will be greatly appreciated! I am also interested in how great a transition you think it might be for me to go from labor and delivery staff nurse to a case manager on an oncology floor. I am a quick-learner, but I hate not knowing what I'm doing, tend to like to know what I'm doing before I start doing it, you know?

Well, with all that information, I hope someone could give me more in order to make a better decision on the whole case manager employment. Is this even doable for someone like me?

Thanks for listening to me babble...and thanks again in advance for your help!

Case Management is all about outcomes. I'm too sleepy (from staying up and watching the Oscars), to go into detail about it, so I've enclosed a link to The Commission for Case Management Certification's website. which will help to answer any questions you may have. Good luck with your interview!
