Are there specialized case managers? What areas of specialization are available?

Yes, absolutely! There are many Specialty Case Managers....I was an Oncology Specialty Case Manager, and there are other CMs who specialize in Diabetes, Asthma, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, etc. However, when you obtain your national certification, it will only say CCM (Certified Case Manager), and not reflect any speciality....but there are other certifications you can obtain, in addition to your CCM, if you feel the need, i.e., Case Managers who deal only with Diabetic cases often like to obtain their CODE (Certified Out-patient Diabetic Educator). I'm sure, if you do some research, you will find many more....hope this helped

Question Re: Case managemen specialty?
Thank you nursemonika!

This is great news. This might be the correct path for me. I am extremely interested in either cardiology or oncology, so I hope to focus on one of those specialties. It is great to know I can combine a new field with existing experience - I have a great deal of experience as an administrator shuffling a plethora of activities, roles and responsibilities.

One additional question, if I were to select this career choice, would it be a waste of time to become either an ONP, CVNP, or PNP?

Thanks again!

No, I don't think it would be a waste of time, if that's what you are really interested in. You must have a LOT of time (Ha! Ha!) Becoming an ONP alone takes a lot of time and effort, but if you wanted to add CCM to that, it couldn't hurt, and might make you more marketable. I'm impressed with your optimism and energy Good luck, with whatever you decide.
