Where are all the male nurses??

by BNS_Rob

I'm a male Bachelor of Nursing student in Canada and i would like some info on male nurses or more formally, "Men in Nursing.

Myself and a few female nursing students are putting together a project with this very title.
I am looking for any experiences any of you have had either as a male nurse or involving a male nurse, wether it be good or bad stories, stereotypes, jokes, anything would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance for your input....

Default Well......
My boyfriend is a male nurse and we graduated the same year, but from different schools. He graduated from Indiana University School of Nursing, and I graduated from IVY Tech State College. Both of us graduated with Associate of Science in Nursing because we are both over 40 and wanted to get started in nursing as soon as possible and we both got jobs in our local ER. We are always teasing each other about who went to the best school!
We have four other male nurses in our department. In fact, one night I was the only female nurse working! It really stunk as I got stuck assisting with all the pelvics; one thing the guys NEVER have to do! Now, is that fair?!? I don't think so!!! LOL! I was working with a girl tech and a girl secretary so I hung up a sign in the tech room that said "boyz stay out! gerls only!" or something like that. It really ended up being a fun night though!
Sometimes though I think that the guy nurses have more of a commaradere with the male docs; maybe it is a guy thing or something, but it really does seem that way sometimes. Anyone else feel that way?
Anyway, I really like working with the guys, they're all great and all great nurses; course my favorite is my sweetie!
Hope this is what you looking for.

Pam

I frequently work with a male LPN on team and he is the best. Hardworking, dedicated. I have been guilty of asking him if he would like me to do things like apply the ordered vaginal ointment on a patient or insert a foley on a female. He has politely set me straight on this "No I can do that- but thanks". So now I know better.

Occasionally I wonder what is taking him so long to empty a bedpan and will find him lingering a little longer in a patient's room who is watching a football game on TV (no kidding). lol But all in all I just love his nursing abilities.

Default Male Nurse!
I am a RN working in an inpatient Forensic Psychiatric Hospital. For some reason there tends to be a greater number of RNs who are male in this field, not sure why. Mind you in Canada there are only about 3 or 4 percent of all nurses who are male. I have eighteen years experience and I am very proud of my profession and the opportunities it has generated for me. My only pet peeve is I am still hearing "... Oh your a male nurse....". In fact I am a Nurse. My gender is that of a male. When women in nursing start introducing themselves as a female nurse then perhaps I will become a male nurse!
