Hi Becci

The only way really to find out if you can work is get the province nursing college to assess your transcripts as you will need to sit CRNE at some stage. You do need hours in all specialities when training. There are a few threads in the international forum regarding how to go through the process and work in Canada and on this forum we can chat about local Canadian issues and maybe help you decide on where to live but you will still need to have a look at the different provinces. I have been in NS since April and although not nursing yet as still waiting for province to sort paperwork out we love it here

Thanks very much for a quick reply and informative
What is a CRN and how do i go about finding out how many hours or what they need me to complete?

We are very uneducated when it comes to areas where to live, but like what we see and hear around alberta area?
So who would be contact? Alberta college?
Why contact the colleges?
Infact we dont know,we want a nice house,we will bring over £90k for deposit and have a few quid in bank
Husaband will find work in construction hopefully or even start a new joth path!!(he is self employed plasterer)
Infact just beautiful views/great social life/nice restaurants/good things for kids to do etc etc........Just living a sweet life basically
And not sounding naughty,we would like to be in a nice quiet area and not next to mr and mrs yob
Thanks again

If you look at the sticky posts on top of this page, there's a link to the Colleges/Associations. And also a link to compare wages.
If you google Canada, you can find out about the different provinces, what they offer, like climate, living conditions, cities and so on
CNA is the Canadian Nurses Association
Once you've decided which province you fancy you can contact the appropriate College of Nursing, or Nurses Association.

As was stated above you need to be a general nurse, so you might be short in one or several areas but if you want to go for it, there will be a way to make that up like distance courses and clinicals.

I tried filling form out on the alberta website for it then to say that its only for people who have qualified within 6 months?

So i just sent them a email stating what info they need off me etc etc
Where else would you recommend where they have a childrens hospital in a lovely area?

cheers bexs

CRNE that I mentioned is the Canadian RN exam and you have to meet criteria to be able to sit it. Courses can be made up but see what the province says

As far as I know pure childrens hospitals only exist as center hospitals in the major cities, like Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Montreal

Do you want to stick to PICU or NICU?

Many major hospitals have pediatric units included. In smaller hospitals obviously if children are very sick you need to transfer them out.

It really depends on what you want, do you want to live and work in a city or do you prefer more rural areas? And what about your husband and his work?

I think all provinces have sth. I like Quebec for instance very much, but my french is not fluent enough to work there.
I know a bit of Ontario and I really like Ottawa

There's so much beauty in Canada, it's really up to you what you want Mountains or Coast or both or Prairie, can you stand very cold winters or do you prefer it a bit milder?

so lots to think about

Where is Jan when you need her?

OK, in Alberta, there is the Stollery in Edmonton, and a dedicated children's hospital in Calgary. The major "adult" hospitals also have NICUs.

Construction work is very slow right now in Alberta. House prices are in fact dropping. Tied to all the oil and the global recession is the excuses I've been hearing.

Jan is our resident guru on PICU.
