Toronto Schools - Where should I go?

by Utopia

Hello!
I got accepted into a number of different schools here in the GTA and I am just curious as to how to choose between them. I am mostly concerned about the teaching staff and would like to choose a school where the focus is not on weeding students out, but on helping students learn and succeed. (I hope wanting to attend a school with a supportive faculty is not too much to ask for ).

Is there anyone here who had/is having a great experience in a certain nursing program? The schools I have gotten acceptances from so far are:
Humber, UOIT, and Seneca/York. I am still waiting to hear from Ryerson/Centennial Collab. and Western.

I have attended a few open houses but I can never really get unbiased opinions because faculty/students want to promote their schools.

Thanks!

Are you already living in Canada? If so may move this to the Canadian forum for better advice

I went to Humber, so have a soft spot for that school. Humber is affiliated with University of New Brunswick, and both have a habit of turning out GREAT nurses!

Ryerson also has a good reputation. Honestly, I think it's hard to choose. Depends on where you are living, how far you are OK travelling to clinicals, etc.

Ask yourself "what am I looking for in a school?" then ask the schools what they provide when you go to open houses. Do your lists match up? What's the best fit?

Hope this helps.

Is UOIT a typo for U of T? If so, I went there and can tell you about it - email me. The short version is that I hated it, and so did everybody else I know, BUT you finish in 2 years and get to be in downtown Toronto, so if I had to start all over again I might hold my nose and pick U of T again.

no UOIT is not a typo...it stands for university of ontario institute of technology...something like that. its in oshawa/durham region i think. their nursing program is new - only a few years old apparently. I havent heard anything about it

Hi There. I went to Ryerson and I must say its a really good school with very supportive staff. I started and ended at Ryerson so I cannot comment on George Brown or Centennial. Although I do know some students who went there and noticed BIG differences when they came over to Ryerson (more structured, more supportive professors). I think Ryerson prepares nurses very well for the working world and I know that many hospitals like the kind of nurses Ryerson produces. If I had to do it all over again I would definitely go back. Good luck to you!
